Garage Rip Off Still a Thing - Bromptonaut
My daughter and her husband have a 2017 Skoda Octavia Estate as the main family car.

Last week they took it to a local place hubby's family have used for years for new front tyres. Used to be a family place but recently bought out by a chain albeit a lesser known one. Since then there's been an odd noise from front of the car.

She took it back today and was told it needed new discs/pads and various suspension bits - drop links(?) - replacing and that it was dangerous to drive. Cost to fettle quoted at around £1k.

Fortunately family have long used, and trust implicitly, in independent garage in Llay. Car taken there and husband left work for the afternoon to pick her up as there's no way she could get home again.

Verdict is that there's nothing really wrong with discs or pad. Noise was a pad catching, possibly a sticky calliper. Other stuff will need doing in due course but OK left for next service.

Garage owner said they used to recommend the tyre place but after several other issues they don't anymore. D's father in law has also had issue at tyre place. He asked for a quote for his Passat naming the tyre brand he wanted and was instead given a very hard sell for something else.

Two long standing customers lost.

Brompton, is naming and shaming on here allowed?
If the second garage is right and it is the beginning of a sticky caliper think I'd be tempted to get it sorted sooner than later but my guess is that its dirt/ rust in between the wheel and hub, cost nothing to check plus it would give them the opportunity to torque the wheel nuts properly, first place probably wound them on with a windy gun.

I believe not.

If I'd had the experience myself and could phrase it as I went to X-tyres in Y-town then it might pass muster but I don't think second hand stories are a way to go.

Don't see how they managed to get a pad catching by changing a tyre. Anyway if the FiL has been leg lifted then they won't be done a third time.

Is this noise still there?

I don't think the suggestion was necessarily that anything had been fiddled with; noise after they'd changed tyre may be happenstance.

Does anybody more informed mechanically than I am want to contemplate how a pad could be made to catch the disc?

You can't not really unless you start getting silly. The pad sits in the carrier.

All depends really on what the noise was, might be totally unrelated to the tyre or brakes. The second garage, from your description seemed unsure as to what it was.

They knew it was pad/disc. Reason was the catch.

So they sorted the noise or not?

Not sure.

Will ask.

Noise is a "how long is a piece of string thing". you need to be specific about how, when sound etc to root the cause.

At 120k I "think" i have a wheel bearing going, I think its front and I think its left

Naming and shaming policy doc

www.car4play.com/terms/nameandshame.htm

It's linked to at the very top level (where you see all the forums listed)

www.car4play.com/forum/

As it says,

"2. Moderation will tend to err on the side of caution for "shaming". "

and later

"it would be helpful if posters could try and give fact-heavy accounts of their experiences, as opposed to judgement-heavy. In this way, forum members can make their own assessment as to the experience, and the chance of defamation is minimised"

I don't remember much need for naming and shaming but were it to become more of a "thing" I guess we'd end up revisiting the guidelines.

But in this instance the allegation seems well supported.

This is common I think. I have a good MoT man who is realistic about things and I rely on that for suspension checks. He knows to do a thorough job and that's what I want.

MoT advisories are another thing. The Subaru I just bought had an advisory a year ago for front discs "rusty and scored but not dangerous". The discs had a bit of a lip and had those ridges that sometimes develop - this is a year and 4,000 miles later. The vendor (a very good local dealer that I can recommend) said he'd get it MoT'd and replace them "if necessary". It flew through the MoT with no advisories!

In fairness my brother, who inspects and buys dozens of cars a year on behalf of his employer, said he wouldn't condemn them. The dealer replaced them anyway because I asked him to.
