At 4:15pm on Saturday afternoon someone's car went up in flames in Car Park 1 at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4g4ljmzrk2o
An initial survey today has confirmed that there is damage to the building, and the car park will therefore be closed "for the foreseeable future". With 1,050 parking spaces at a very busy hospital, that's quite likely to be over 800 cars stuck in there, belonging to staff, visitors, and parents of very sick children.
The hospital trust is funding Ubers for affected staff members to get to and from work, and offering assistance to members of the public. The trust has posted regular updates on Facebook, but a lot of questions remain to be answered; not least where 1,000 cars are going to park on an already constrained site for those attending essential hospital appointments and making visits.
An unholy mess throughout, I'm just thankful not to be among those affected.

Last time I used it, they had a section closed off for building work. I had a problem finding a space and only got lucky when someone pulled out.
I wonder if a solution may be to use one of the others and get an Uber?

Hopefully once the structural engineers have a look see undamaged cars van be retrieved.
Having the car park out of use for an extended period will be a massive problem. Hopefully the P&R schemes/buses can cope.

Car parking is always difficult at Addenbrookes although the public transport is good. If those who can take the bus do and leave the car parks for those with real access problems there shouldn’t be an issue

So far no-one seems to be attributing the fire to an EV, in contrast to the unfounded hysteria which followed the Luton Airport car park fire.
