I had Halfords fit the dashcam into the Korando when I bought it nearly 4 years ago. Was getting error messages to continually format sd card. would not connect to bluetooth and would not update, Nextbase customer service useless.. they don't bother replying.. On the offchance went into halfords where I had bought it from and one of the team who knew about the dashcams showed me step by step how to do a complete reset, which then allowed it to pair and then it autoupdated the firmware. Probably spent half an hour helping me and all works well now. Cost ZERO. But took in a larhe box of chocolates to say thank you. At home able to view footage again. HALLELUJAH !!! | That's good to hear, espaecially as Halfords are often favourite for a slating on social media in motoring circles. Unwarranted as it turns out for you. |

Not a big fan of Halfords but a couple of weeks ago I had a click and collect order from them. Same price as Amazon and I knew I'd be going past the store the following day. Arrived at the desk at the rear of the store and the member of staff (George) was serving another customer who didn't convey his requirements very clearly, so George had to keep asking him to repeat the request. It was power steering oil and George couldn't find it on the shelf and kept returning to the computer. Back and forth several times. Got the impression George didn't have a clue what he was looking for on the shelf anyway. Reminded me of Four Candles. George wouldn't have lasted five minutes in a motor factors, at least not my local one where the staff are extremely well clued up. As I left there was a clutch kit being delivered by ECP. Why on earth wouldn't a customer not just go direct! Last edited by: ChrisM on Thu 30 Oct 25 at 12:44

I made a career out of turn it off(reset) and on again.Nice to hear re Halfords. I wouldn't take my car there for service (I don't think they even do that now?) but they have a place in our motoring needs - for me latterly in changing awkward headlight bulbs. Can I give another shout out for another company that usually gets a bad rep - Kwik fit . They were fab when I had a puncture when the tyre couldn't be saved (they showed me it - it was toast). However i found the guy incredibly knowledgeable and spent ages discussing numerous brands of all season tyres that I eventually will buy for my Swace once I wear out the original boots. |

| I used to use either of two local Halfords for MOT but without service. They were no worse than any other. Once tried to get me to pay quite an amount to fix brakes ( - can't recall what the problem was now) but my little man blew the carp out with his air hose and it passed. |

However i found the >> guy incredibly knowledgeable and spent ages discussing numerous brands..... My experience was very different. Here is the HJ forum text of a catalytic converter scam attempt on my son's 10yr old Citroen Xantia 17yrs ago. The Well Known National Group's reputation so often depends on the calibre of the local individuals. "Well known national group - credulous son told need new CAT [1.4i, 114,000] cost 'around £400 all in'. I paid MoT fee, drove 2 miles to garage we usually use, 'sailed through' MoT - completely different emission readings, way below WKNG's. Usual garage not surprised, apparently local WKNG has a 'reputation' . Returned to WKNG branch for explanation. Showed me their catalogue...'depending where the Lambda goes it's this one at £200 or that one at £300 plus labour plus vat - no, we've nothing cheaper'. Told cats'r'us etc on internet around 50 notes and asked had they done the test properly - i.e. cat stabilisation, then last 5secs of 30 secs properly warmed up etc.. Showed me 'oil 80deg' on printout.......became defensive and belligerent." I complained to the trading standards people and the WKNG head office which apologised and refunded the MoT cost. Must have been so easy to diddle unsuspecting punters by merely waiting 20 mins or so on a cold day for the cat to cool down but the oil stays warm. I hope this cat scam is not still going on. |

In the past I'd have agreed but on this recent occasion I had a tyre issue that needed sorting on a Sunday as I was on a long trip away the next day. At Kwikfit I wasn't ripped off and received good advice. However would I ever go there for an MOT - er no. Last edited by: BigJohn on Sun 2 Nov 25 at 16:44

BigJohn: "Can I give another shout out for another company that usually gets a bad rep - Kwik fit. They were fab..." John F: "My experience was very different... The Well Known National Group's reputation so often depends on the calibre of the local individuals." I usually steer (!) well clear of KF. However, one wet afternoon on the M1 heading north near Derby, my alternator failed. We limped off at the next exit and into Derby (with which I am totally unfamiliar) and saw a branch of KF. They had a quick look, offered to fix it the next day when they had had a replacement delivered, called a taxi to get us to a Travelodge nearby and phoned us the next morning around 10:00 when the part arrived. Though the car ran OK afterwards, I was suspicious of the quality of the part and workmanship and had them checked by my trusted indy when we got home. He reported all was fine and the car ran for many years (including a long trip to SE France) without any electrical problems whatsoever, apart from the time I flattened the battery overnight by leaving the portable mini-fridge switched on. As JF says, it all depends on what a particular branch is like. I believe it's a franchise set-up, which might explain discrepancies. Last edited by: James Loveless on Sun 2 Nov 25 at 16:52

More generally, it is really difficult for a national or international company (or even a local one) to shake off a bad reputation however justified it may have been at the time. Companies who in the eighties had build or rust problems are probably still shunned by many. The example above may be a different company these days. This only crossed my mind the other week when we were discussing local pub restaurants with friends as there are a few we don't/won't return to because of one (probably not that) bad experience many years ago - since when they are likely to have been refurbed, changed hands, menus, staff etc etc. And maybe even at the time they weren't that bad - we just had one bad experience on one day. The effect is magnified for large companies, particularly with social media, and I suspect many who might say they would never use, for instance KwikFit, have never used them anyway, and are just acting on reputation - which in itself isn't completely unreasonable but one should sometimes form one's own views, or update them with their own experience. It's one reason I don't really attach too much credence of online reviews of hotels or AirBNB etc, unless they are overwhelming negative. |

I'd use KF for an MOT again, they were good. Car went through no minors at all. Used them for tyres a few times, again no problems . They aren't the absolute cheapest but they are open 7 days a week and have tyres in stock rather than have to ship them in. Or if they do they are there next day. That's what I've found from the local one to me anyway. I've seen people pop in with 'my cars making a funny noise' and they've helped them out. |

Oddly enough. The one a friend had a few years ago was named after a world wide series of very fast single seater racing cars trading in the local and East Anglia area. Told needed new shock absorbers during a slightly early 1st MOT. Discussion went along the lines of warranty won't cover it. Oh yes they've just replaced 1 under warranty. After checking with Kia no problem with the other. Very faint misting.. Depends on where you are. |
