Why might you not renew your licence?
Reply for Duncan, I thought worth a new thread.

Back in the day (original post) I had a feeling this would happen one day and it is approaching.
Now added Inherited retinal Degeneration to the mix, ( loss of photoreceptors )
Still happy to drive daytime but my very nice Consultant has promised me that he will say when to stop driving AND notify DVLA immediately without fail. If I feel it is necessary I'll stop myself AND tell DVLA.
I am a lot of things but I don't want to be the OAP in court for injuring or worse other people or property.

Thank for the reply ORB. Sorry to hear about the retinal degeneration.
My brother used to suffer from macular degeneration and because it can be an hereditary thing, I was offered annual consultations including photos of the back of the eye and fields vision test finishing up with a nice chat with a consultant eye bloke (I think he was called something else, but I can't remember what).
Over several years he kept saying to me that there was no sign of MD and if it did start it would take perhaps ten years to have any effect and as I am now XX years old - clue - I have just renewed my DL for the 8th time, I decided this year to stop going.
I wish you well.

A lot of my customers (I drive for SPT My Bus) struggle with giving up their cars. It was made easier when they found out that they qualified for dialysis a bus services if they were over 80 or had certain disabilities. This will take you door to door within your zoned area. So no need to slum it with feral kids and junkies on service buses too often.

...sorts their kidneys on the journey...? ;-)
(Presumably, "dial a bus")

I know a few who can sort out constipation problems.

Ah, yes. Really should read before posting stuff.

SLO76, where are you based?
My dad is 93, lives in Airdrie, and is not fit enough to walk to the nearest bus stop? Do you know what the criteria is for this, would he be suitable and how I go about it?

I think if you ask his local council...

Main info here. As far as I can tell at over 80 he'll qualify, but he'll have to register.
The various buses seem to serve areas within fixed boundaries, so you'd have to determine where he could get to from where he lives.

Sorry for the slow reply, wasn’t able to post anything for a few days there for some reason. He’ll qualify on age alone, you just need to be over 80 or have certain disabilities. It’s a kerb to kerb service that’ll take him direct to where he wants to go. He’ll get 4 journeys a week, a trip to and from a destination counts as 2. Drivers will help carry shopping etc. it’s a good service, but in some areas it’s very well used so you can’t always get the times or days you want. We don’t run the one in Airdrie, it’ll be another firm on behalf of SPT, so unfortunately it won’t be me.
Here’s the link.

Cheers guys, gonna give them a phone.
My dad has “heard” that you are picked up as part of a route and your 5 min journey might be 20 mins if you are one of several pick ups ?
I need to phone and get some facts.

There’s no route. I get a list and just work my way through it. Sometimes you might be picked up along with someone else if it fits in with where you’re all going, but mostly you’re just on your own. The customers typically love the service, it’s much more personal with most routes held by the same driver so you build up a relationship with your clients. Highly recommend trying it out, it’ll let him have a bit more independence.

Thanks - at least in part - to the Barnett Formula.
The English subsidizing the Scots again.

Aye it’s hard to understand why you were so desperate to keep hold of us…
