I had no idea.
The Capri costs from £42,085.
The ID 5 costs from £41,090.
I think they both missed a trick by not pricing them at £39,995 to avoid the luxury car tax.
Don't think either of them stand out as desirable cars IMHO.

Capri and Explorer are ID4, Transit Connect is a Caddy, VW Transporter is a Transit, and VW Amarok is a Ford Ranger.
|
Thanks.
The ID 4 is still a "meh" car.
VW and Ford need to do better.

The marketeers at Ford need their eyes ripped from their sockets.
Ford Capri III? no a travesty of the names.
The Ford E mustang? rediculous abuse of the name.
|
"III" is from the forum options I think, but the car should never have been called a Capri.
|
Why on earth not? It’s just a name. The old one went out of production 50 years ago. Most people who buy the new model weren’t even born then.

Because it is still a revered well known classic even to 20/30/40nyear old car buyers. Being soeone who only buys cars as transport, means you dont understand.
|
Capri reverence and dislike of the new model: I think it's because there were absolutely no styling cue from the old model that many could discern.
I contrast, the new Renault 5 has the certainly hit the nail on the head with the right "look and feel", both for the exterior and interior.
Fiat did the same with the new 500 when it came out, clearly seeing how well the new Mini was liked at the time.

Yes, both of those companies managed the use of a classic name well. The new Renault 5 is sheer genius in how to modernise a car, using styling cues and style from the model it is named after.
|
Renault, genius, electric.
Who'd a thunk it!? ;-)

And you could have this:

BTW Zero - you having a day out at Goodwoof later this month?
|
Strangely, early Mk2 (pre facelift) Capri's are my least favourite.
Late Mk1 facelift 3 litres, Late Mk2 2.8i are my sweet spot. Thats a very very nice example tho, at a sensible price.
However this would be the dream

Done goodwoof, Its full of silly people with silly dogs called Biscuit.

Mine was a 1600 Mk1 Facelift, Le Mans green with a black vinyl roof. I only sold it because marriage and a mortgage meant going back to a motorbike for a couple of years. The young bloke who bought it was more interested in how the stereo performed rather than the car and not surprisingly wrote it off in three months.
|
The Peranas are rare as hen's teeth, probably because they were a bit of a handfull with a heavy frontend and a loose backend.
I had a succession of V6 Cortinas at that time but a mate had another of Basil Green's creations - the Granada Perana.
|
Showing my age again but 4 friends had Capri’s.
One was a two time LHD which he brought back to the uk after living in Belgium for a few years. Others ranged from basic 1.6 to 2.0L and my parents neighbour had a friend in the music biz who lived in London. He had a 3.0S.
I’d forgotten I’d owned a D reg Sierra XR 4x4 for a while…V6 if memory serves me right. Definitely silver.
Iconic names…friend owned a second hand Mk2 Escort Mexico in orange. Probably mid 70s, only a 1.6 Pinto pushing out circa 90hp, but we drooled over it. I don’t think the name Mexico has been reincarnated in car form. I scan still imagine it outside Grange, Thornton & Hanson Sports centres in Bradford where we played 5 a side after work.

I would hope not. Ford would probably give to an electric pick up truck.
|
I thought Great Wall Motor had registered the trademark.
|
Ford naming convention in the 1970s included:
Capri - an exotic island in the Med frequented by film stars etc
Cortina - premium skiing destination
Consul - diplomatic representative stationed in a foreign country
Fiesta - fun in Spain
Granada - famed for the Alhambra
What they all have in common - aspirational exotic imagery before the days of discount airfares and package holidays.
There may be a residual affection for the Capri name, particularly amongst those over 60. Most below the age of 40 would have difficulty placing it on a map, and no idea of its meaning.
The Capri may be familiar to younger petrol heads - personally I was unimpressed - a triumph of style over substance with limited passenger and luggage space.
|
o idea of its meaning.

It had sufficent space to flip the car seat back down for a quick shag. It was a babe magnet,
|
A Ford Capri certainly was a fanny magnet. Well, there was usually a see you next Tuesday in the driver's seat whenever I saw one anyway.
|
Capri was a two door sports saloon. The new Capri is a four door family car, surely Cortina would have been more appropriate. Imo. My mate has a 2.8 Brooklands version(?) and he is spitting feathers
|
>>Cortina...
More appropriate, and may have given it some "respect".
|
If they bring out an electric granada, I am going to fly to Michigan and firebomb dearborn
|
Zero is now on a watchlist! :-D
|
Ford have really missed a trick here - an opportunity to launch an up to date but retro-esq car that I think would have sold like hot cakes.
As mentioned above the new Renault 5 - er wow!! Oh and the new Renault 4 - double wow.

>>Renault 4...
Just seen a YouTube review. I like it. Quirky, not as trendy as the 5, but "cute". I suspect it will depreciate a bit faster than the 5, so I may be looking at an ex-demo or nearly new one in a few years.
