LED brake lights, Are some far too bright ? - henry k
Is there a race on to see which car maker can install the most LED brake lights?
I was following a 10 reg Boxster in traffic this evening and IMO the brake lights were far too bright.
I was in a Yaris so not exactly at eye level with the brake lights and I have read comments about LEDs at eye level on SUV etc. but not about lower level mounted lights.
I have not been aware of over bright LED brake lights before so is the Boxster the worst ?

I am surprised the EU has not ruled on this aspect of cars :-(

It's the continuation of the battle to cast the brightest whiter than white fairy lights at the front end (even in broad daylight, look at me), now we have the contest for the prettiest (well maybe) loudest pattern battle on the back side too...bit too camp for me but each to their own.

It'll be hells own job being a pedestrian or cyclist soon unless you can carry 500w of illumination.

The pedestrians in my area that value their lives, or use their brain, wear flashing cycle LED's when on unlit country roads without pavements.

A standard size rectangle of lights with a standard output on cars would be nice.

Most of the flashing ones I've seen are practically useless - they are far too small and often get covered with the cyclists' coat. They should be used in conjunction with a decent steady red light on the back.

I agree that all lights on modern vehicles are now getting too bright, though.

"bit too camp for me" I hadn't thought of it like that but I do agree. You never saw them on Austin Healeys :-)

oh dear. I remember seeing a photo of an Elan done up like that many years ago. But at least it had pop up headlights and you could make it "wink". But a girly thing only. I hope!

Not only are they annoying, but LED's that bright will have a limited life, and will look a bit silly when they start to fizzle out. I bet you have to replace the whole set...

Yes. So are some headlamps.

It's not just their brightness, but the far more abrupt on-off nature that I find distracting.

I realise that the milliseconds saved against the heating of a tungsten filament ought to be beneficial, but it doesn't work for me...
