She pleaded not to be banned as she could not travel by public transport for her personal safety.
The bench was not impressed and said the cost of running a £300K MB she could afford a taxi!
A bit of common sense from the bench.
15 month ban

BRILLIANT!

Excellent! I am completely in favour of equal treatment under the law for all, regardless of race, religion, sex....or celebrity status.
Let's face it she got of lightly because she can handle the ban better than the average man or woman, who may lose their job over a ban like this.

Why are the Jocks interested in her? The case was heard in London.
Is she a sweaty?

...Is she a sweaty?...
Don't think so.
The Scotsman is a national newspaper and carried a few pars of agency copy on the story as part of its show business coverage.
Sky News did more:

All over the country "Pop stars", footballers, would-be celebrities get caught for serious motoring offences and then get
1) Let off charges by using a Big Wig Lawyer
2) Gets a derisory fine - e.g Earns £80K /week and fined £500 and 6 points
3) Pleads not to be banned as he/she cannot travel on the train / bus as they could be harassed by members of the public.
Cases are continued while Legal Eagles discuss matters
In the case of Sugababe the Bench said if you can afford a £300K car you can afford a taxi (or a driver etc). Common sense from the Courts.........a breath of fresh air
|
All these footballers and minor celebrities get 'fined' far more than the average motorist, because they fight the cases with expensive lawyers, whereas the rest of us tend to plead Guilty and have done with it.
They might walk out of a court and persuade themselves they've 'got off', but in reality they've paid out far more than they needed to and we all know deep down what the score was.

I don't get it. Being banned from driving? That suggests she passed a test on the first place ...

not sure about the derisory fine though - for a Breath Reading of 58mg , as in this case, the Magistrates Sentencing Guidelines for a 1st offender are:
*12-16 month ban
*Band "C" fine. (calculated as 150% of nett weekly income in excess of £100)
Which is in line with the sentence handed out - 14 months ban & £2000 fine.
A Financial Means form is filled out at court, showing income/expenditure
and this is used to calculate the fine. someone on the National Average wage would be fined around £450 plus costs.
The magistrates have some discretion - but not much.

they should get community service instead of fines, now that is inconvenient if you like your sunday lie-ins
|
A community penalty also has the benefit of being equally punishing to both rich and poor.
