It seems bizarre on the limited facts stated. I think the lowest normal road tyres are rated at 99mph.
Maybe some US aftermarket tyres are for “show” not “go”. Or he’d fitted a specialised tyre such as winter studded. Or Toyota made a mistake.
I doubt we’ll ever hear the full outcome.

The GR Yaris (UK supplied) Circuit Pack comes with those sticky Michelin Pilot 4 Sport tyres as standard..and lightweight alloys etc etc.
I bought the Convenience Pack which were shod with Dunlop rubber as standard. Suits me…I prefer the better JBL sound system, head up display to the harder core version.

I think the Mail's motoring 'experts' need to venture a little further west than Slough. Different wheel and tyre options along with their associated speed limitations have been offered in the US for more than 30yrs.

Part of the Z28 'package' for my car includes upgraded wheels and tyres (plus V8, brakes, suspension etc.) If you didn't order the full Z28 package or the individual wheel and tyre upgrade option then the car left the factory with the ECU limiter set to 120mph (IIRC). Insurance companies also took this into account when setting premiums. In this particular case I suspect someone has confused a base Corolla with the GR.
