Fancy this Ford Escort for £600.

I'd buy it if only I had somewhere to put it though.

Way over priced. Can get better old cars than that for 2/3 the money, Escorts included, plus that one has sat around - ie it will need another £500 spending on it as soon as you use it when all the perished parts start failing.

The second one looks a bit of a dog - Liverpool registered to boot, probably could tell a tale or two at that vintage.

You know what they used to call XR3is in Liverpool ? Ford Kebabs ( take aways )

Some friends of ours bought an immaculate, one owner from new Y reg 1.6 Ghia a few years ago, with 60,000 genuine miles. It was absolutely immaculate inside and out. They then went on to slowly destroy it over the space of a couple of years. Every time I saw it, it had a new dent or scrape, and the engine sounded rougher and rougher (it was never serviced in the time they had it). When they emigrated a couple of years ago, it went to the scrappy. It made me really angry.

Tat.
All of them..
Not worth the insurance..
Ford Escort - Bangernomics - possibly the best one yet ? - DP
People probably said that at some stage about almost everything that you see at a classic car show today.
People will always pamper and maintain Ferraris, Bentleys, Astons etc. It's the every day bread and butter stuff that falls into banger status and gets scrapped because it's seen as worthless tat.
I reckon any 1980's family hack/repmobile in good nick will only go up in value.

Inclined to agree. It's likely I'll have some *classic* for a bit of fun in a few years when real retirement beckons. But if you're going to run some modest classic from the past at least make it interesting like a P6 Rover, Triumph 2000, Citroen DS, Stag or similar.

Pretty well everything is interesting to someone whether for sentimental "I used to have one of these" or other reasons. Even classic owners like to be different sometimes.
The "interesting" ones such as he ones you mention become commonplace in the classic car world and some people like to be different.
I visited a steam railway over the summer where, among others, one of the Ford Escort clubs was having a meet up, I enjoyed a look at a number of rwd escorts, for once not the rs2000 etc, brought back some memories.

Fair enough CD. There was nothing elitist about my comments... just that should I do this I want to get something that's a nice place to sit in with reasonable road manners/ride. I wouldn't go to shows so the fact these *nicer* cars are more popular wouldn't be an issue... well except their firm prices.

A lad in the 80's would not want to be seen dead in one of these old bangers above today or in a good few years his "classic" was the XR31 Golf Gti, Sri RS Cosworth etc these are the cars that appeal the burning interest to buy one and restore or polish it and drive it on sundays.

It's each to there own. For me give me a Rs Cosworth.

>>>A lad in the 80's would not want to be seen dead in one of these old bangers.

Hmmm... well it seems to be accepted the 80s was a period with minimal taste in all respects :-)

Do agree though we hark back to our formative years and cars we might have ridden in as kids.

I remember when I was 8 seeing a Lancia Thema and thinking it looked like a Mafia car. It seemed impossibly cool and exotic. Ive wanted one ever since.
Ford Escort - Bangernomics - possibly the best one yet ? - Fenlander
The interior of a Thema was a wonder of leather, wood (fake?) and dials. I was put off by their association with the similar Fiat Chroma which you couldn't give away in the 80s.

Funny though this thing that you think back to cars of your youth. Our nearest brush with a big Lancia was when we came so close in the early 80s to buying a used Gamma Coupe for the Mrs.

faced.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/lancia-gamma2.jpg

Magnificent beast in dark met blue with cream leather but the reputation of the flat 4 engine for throwing cambelts, overtheating and using oil finally made us see sense.
Ford Escort - Bangernomics - possibly the best one yet ? - Old Sock
Agreed, Fen - I too very nearly succumbed to a Gamma Coupé (with an expired engine) as a 'fixer'. A very rare sight today.

The contemporary Alfa GTV6 had a similar 'feel', though I never did like the Thema - I'd discovered the Citroën CX by then..... :-)

An old Escort is like an old Cortina/Maxi/1100/Mini/etc.

You drive one today and you think it's horrible.

It is..

I had a 1946 Rover 16, a 1962 Rover 100 and a 1967 Lotus ELan S3. No fun to drive today in modern traffic.

If you don't enjoy driving them daily, waste of time...

If I wanted a classic, I would buy an M3. At least any M3 could fo, corner and stop.

A few months back I visited the Lancaster Bomber based at East Spilsby, Lincs. My visit happened to coincide with a Rover owners club meeting. Various 75's, and the Auntie type plus a few real old ones...but the thing which caught my eye was a beige Maestro, completely original and immaculate. It wasn't quite old enough to be classed as a true classic in my opinion, but still young enough to be fresh in my memory as a car from a bygone decade which you just don't see anymore. It may have been a shag of bit in its day but I find cars like that interesting and quirky.
Ford Escort - Bangernomics - possibly the best one yet ? - Bigtee
A Maestro & Montego were a right pile in the day and im supprised any have survived today!

What a pile to work on come on Bellboy back me up!!

A few years ago when our Triumph 2000 was still running, a group of youths shouted "cool car!"as my wife drove past.
Yesterday one of my daughter's friends, aged 17, said our Volvo 240 was a "cool car", and noticed what a fantastic turning circle it had.

Fashion moves on, but nothing really changes.
Ford Escort - Bangernomics - possibly the best one yet ? - Runfer D'Hills
I learned to drive on a Volvo 240. Still have a hankering to own one. Estate of course although my dad's was a saloon. Sort of car to take a year or three off and drive round the world in. Either that or an old Defender but having actually owned one of those as an adult I'm not sure it'd get all the way round the globe without having to be rebuilt twice.

I guess that's where you and I disagree, IMO classic cars should be enjoyable to drive when you feel like it. They are not usually suitable for every day, but a sunny weekend when you're not in a great hurry to rush somewhere that's when you can enjoy them properly.
They are a hobby something to enjoy in your off time.
I would hate to commute on a steam train, but I will drive miles at a weekend to film one going by on occasion.
Each to their own

I recall Beaulieu motor museum having a fit of the vapours over whether or not a Bond microcar should be included.

Of course it should. All cars that used to exist should be retained somewhere, regardless of how awful they were. I've an hankering after a Trabby.

It might mean my KIA Pride could be an asset one day. ;>)
Ford Escort - Bangernomics - possibly the best one yet ? - TheManWithNoName
Just stay away from Morris Marina's and er...falling piano's.
Ford Escort - Bangernomics - possibly the best one yet ? - commerdriver
Beaulieu have taste, there has been a Commer camper van there for many years :-)

...It was absolutely immaculate inside and out. They then went on to slowly destroy it...

Same thing happened to my first car, a Triumph Herald.

Sold it to a friend's neighbour and it was a wreck inside a year.

It made me dislike visiting my friend because it meant I had to see my poor Herald.

Great pity.

They used to call them something else too, far too rude for here though.

Well, how about a 1993 Ford Kebab with MoT until March next year for £500, current owner for 5 years?
