 MOT Advisories - zippy
Miss Z's Aygo has the following MOT advisory:

Nearside Front Brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened worn/ lipped (1.1.14 (a) (ii))

Offside Front Brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened worn/ lipped (1.1.14 (a) (ii))

What does this mean in really simple to someone who has no idea about cars mechanics please?

She got the car as a 6 month old ex-demo with about 500 miles on the clock and has added another 25,000 over 5 years.

The tester has seen some signs of wear/corrosion on the disc but not serious and, as it passed, the brakes work as required.

Wear on the disc leading to a lip around the outer edge and inside, outwith the area swept by the pad, is normal. There will be a minimum thickness specified but this car is nowhere near that.

Just keep and eye on them. Unless your daughter is heavy on the brakes I'd expect discs to last at least 50k mile - 2 sets of pads.

It means that at some time in the next 12 months, the front disks will need to be skimmed or replaced, probably replace pads at the same time.

Disks are about 25 quid each, pads about 15 quid a set, at 6 years old, probably good idea to change brake fluid, about 25 quid. Two hours labour, at say 150 quid, so all in say 240 quid.

Or it might pass the next MOT with the same advisories. You pays your money or you take your choice. I'd take the chance if the brakes feel ok

Advisories really mean give it some attention at some point - low milage means they will probably be OK for another 12 months - ask when you next get a service from a garage you trust!

3rd party new pads & disks not that expensive £100-£150 - genuine Toyota parts?

What it means is that the disc is exhibiting visual signs of wear. It probably has a lip on its outer edge. They all do that as the pads don't quite stretch that far.
Discs have a minimum thickness which is cast into the disc somewhere but you need to remove it to read that. They do wear down over time.
Lack of use or low mileage can also take its toll particularly in winter. Her Aygo would fall into this category.
If you can see the disc face it should be nice and shiny with no real marks or grooves. (after a run)
If I'm doing a brake service and am happy with the disc condition I run an angle grinder round the perimeter and take off the lip. But I'm anal about such things. :/ I tend to change discs and pads earlier rather than later because i like nice shiny or painted disc hubs :)
If she has it serviced I'd get an opinion off the garage. Brake parts are consumables and are relatively cheap unless a main dealer or fast fit place tries to up sell. Its an advisory and testers start to consider what the item might be like 11 months ahead.
Rear discs seem to deteriorate quite quickly for some reason.

Thanks all!

I'd add that as there's (presumably) no comment about braking efficiency or balance then there's nothing to worry about.

When my son’s Aygo needed new brakes, it started making a slight squealing noise. Apparently that’s normal I was told. Which could of course be rubbish.
In any event the new ones were not at all expensive.

One consideration is how long you intend to keep the car.

If changing within the next year or so - no action

If keeping it for several years - change pads and disc as at some point in your ownership they will almost certainly need to be replaced. May as well do it as a planned expenditure rather than in a rush due to MoT failure.

Some pads have a little metal tab that hits the disc when the pads wear below a certain limit. I've never experienced the noise, but I should think it's more than 'a slight squealing noise'

Acoustic wear indicators.

It varies - I'd say it's typically quite a loud squeal when braking and then it does it all the time after a while. I can sometimes sound like ringing / jingling kind of sound.

It means the brakes are working.

I had an advisory on my Guzzi last year. 2000 miles and 12 months later it passes with no advisories at the same test centre.
