I'm cruising down the A1 thismorning in an artic St Neots bypass 50mph on cruise, road's quiet at 10am ish.
I spot Transit van in the mirror bearing down behind me at high speed i estimate as 90 plus, he's in the inside lane until the very last second and swerves out barely missing the truck by a fag paper and cuts it close as he pulls in in front again.
Ah well he's gone, layby a little further ahead roughly 400 yards in length with one truck parked in it at the far end...Transit fully enters the layby at the same speed travels along it creating a minor sandstorm and swerves out just before he piled into the parked truck.
I really thought he was going to hit the parked vehicle and had started to brake in anticipation.
What the heck was going on.

Probably "on" something and thought the layby was lane one. Layby's and hard shoulders are dangerous places, I saw someone rear end a truck at speed in a layby a few years ago.

Normal behaviour for white van man.

Was the transit a dull darkish red colour? At the layby just before the Wyboston 60 mph limit?

I know that area very well. Lots of Transits driven in that manner around there... ;-)
Talking of which, I saw a 60 plate Transit, fitted with tow hitch and orange roof beacon, being "inspected" by a gathering of half a dozen blokes next to the A511 at Bardon yesterday morning - they've been camped there for the last four weeks but it looked as though the new van had only just arrived.

I too thought of under the influence of something.
You get used to quickly driven white vans but this stood out by a mile.
It was silver and i'm not sure which of the two layby's it was, the layby was long with no separation strip and the road was straight at that point, i think it was the first one after the long left hander as you round St Neots but can't be sure, maybe half a mile or so from Wyboston turn for A428.
I couldn't even tell you the year of it, went past like a dose of salts, no beacon but that doesn't mean it never tows a caravan..;)

Did he actually hit the truck?
If he did I feel sorry for the truck driver......the driver of the Van good riddance, to bad rubbish.
If he didnt hit the truck i feel sorry for the person who might inadvertantly be in his way the next time.............the driver of the Van good riddance, to bad rubbish.
