I am interested in getting an auto to save my left leg's knee pain. I currently have a Golf MK7 manual but don't want any DSG type Autos.
I started researching Ford models and didn't realise they'd dumped their equivalent DSG box I favour of a more conventional one with a torque converter.
I'd marry this with a 1.5 ecoboost engine as I'm not keen with the idea of 3-cyl 1litre engines. I like the new Focus interior as the maintain sensible knobs to control both radio and aircon.

Why? they are very widespread and very good engines. There is no reason not to have a 3cyl engine.

Just based on VW Polo rental or courtesy car. Didn't feel silky smooth.
Don't Ford do any 4 cyl engines now of that capacity?

Ford don't even list a 1.5 ecoboost at the moment. 1.0 triple or a 2.3 are the only petrol models currently.

I prefer TC auto boxes too. I wonder when or on which model run they were reintroduced to the Ford ranges? Anyone know?
Not that I'm shopping right now, but at some point that ( to me significant ) change could, for example, make a mildly second hand Mondeo estate attractive to me again.
|
Ford TC gearboxes roughly 2-2.5 years old - Fiesta, Focus, Kuga BUT you have to be careful as the last of the POWERSHIFT boxes hung.
Anybody who researched their choice would be well aware of the sloping shoulders of Uncle Henry's descendants - 1 litre 3 cyl engines & Powershift autos had a really bad press.
Ford owned up to the engine latterly but not the gearboxes.
|
Well their build a car on the website is confusing as sometimes I can configure a focus with 1.5 engine and 8 speed TC box and then just now I can't see the 1.5 litre engine. I'm sure each time I am speccing the Titanium version. The 'new' auto seems to have a twiddly knob gear selector.

Our local dealer has a 1.5 8 speed auto in stock. Could be a bargain there.

Sheesh, twenty five grand for an Escort?! That really how much they are now?
Wowser!
:-(
|
I'm afraid a Focus would be way down my list for that sort of money.

Thats the list price. Thats not the price you pay.

Indeed. Anyone who pays list for a Ford (excepting certain rare models) needs their bumps felt.
Current par discount is in the region of 20-22% for most. Last time I bought a Ford it was at 25% below list.

Are you playing the naive game on purpose? Any new, medium sized hatchback today from the mainstream manufacturers cost about the same. And you know that, don't you?

Honestly, not particularly, it's not a type, size, or category of car that's ever been on my radar. I suppose if I'd been asked, I might have thought that size of car would have been more than £15K but less than £20K new. But, I can see now that I'm very much out of touch with the market. Genuinely surprised that prices have moved into that sort of region for that size of car.
I paid, with my employer's money, £32K four years ago for a well specified E Class estate. Albeit a run out model at a discount.
Just goes to show how things change as they say.
|
I am sort of with you on that Runfer, I guess we're just not moving with the times. Though the point about rarely paying anywhere near list price for Fords is very true.
On my EV forum I was surprised how many said they'd put down a deposit on the new Tesla @ around £40k - just ordinary people AFAIK - and that seems an awful lot for a car to me and I was surprised that quite so many had the money for it and, more importantly, were prepared to spend it. (A number did subsequently cancel because even a fairly basic spec came in at over £40k, which invoked some special tax which upset people.

...the latest Toyota Yaris Hybrid is pretty much £20k. I think I must be getting old, ‘cause I just can’t get my head around splashing out that much for a small car!
What on earth has happened to new car prices?

You don't have to spend £20,000

That advert says "our price" which implies some discount.
The price list says £26,790 if I read it correctly.

I agree OG, I'd want more than 3 poxy little cylinders, but we are dinosaurs you know.
But the 1.0 Ecoboost probably goes well, at least until the sands of warranty have run out, the plastic pipe of fate spews the coolant of destiny, and the turbo bearings of time smash into the poppet valves of eternity.

Thought you'd finish that with a Samantha gag. As it were.

Funny you should mention Samantha. She's actually got a job as a service receptionist.
She's keen to build up her knowledge and understanding, and she's just off just now to her vehicle maintenance evening class where she says she's keen to strip down a little Austin for a full service.

Odd. I thought she'd just got a job as a stage manager. It's not easy in these difficult times but she's going to try to pull off Twelve Angry Men.
|
It's a fact that Jack Dee nearly quit a couple of years back when they said they were going to rein back on the Samantha gags.

Recent re-runs of ISIHAC from the 90s on R4 show that the innuendos were far more oooh-er than the current ones.
|
If the BBC has decided to tone them down for "insert reason here", why does that reason not apply to repeats?

>> But Hump used to deliver them with such style and aplomb !!!
He certainly did.
The 'Nottingham' intro came round this week. It's mildly funny in a tittering schoolboy way, and I remembered it well but Humph's deadpan delivery made it hilarious anyway.
"It's well documented in official records that the City's original name was 'Snottingham', or 'Home of Snots', but when the Normans came, they couldn't pronounce the letter 'S', so decreed the town be called 'Nottingham' or the 'Home of Notts'. It's easy to understand why this change was resisted so fiercely by the people of Scunthorpe."

The one in the Pentremotors advertisement is an EcoBlue model which is Fordspeak for diesel.
Ecoboost means petrol.
