What are the two metal bars sticking up vertically? Are these some sort of anti rollover protection as it is a soft top? Don't look very refined!

I'd suggest they're some sort of active roll protection that are triggered on impact.

Don’t need to be if you’re hanging upside down! You knew that.

Should have bought a new model Porsche Targa anyway. The most compromised of the current crop of 911s ( so I’ve read) but I wouldn’t crawl over one to get into Italian exotica.

Yes, anti roll protection. My A4 convertible (I miss the 3.2 v6) had them. They were triggered when someone t-boned me.
