Citroen C2 - Things to inspect on any car. - -
During the inspection and cleaning of the underside of the new to us C2 prior to touch up and rustproofing i unclipped the plastic inner wheelarches to check for any trapped salt etc, as no doubt we all do..;)

Made a nasty discovery, just behind the front arch sills there is a huge mud trap at the front of the sill on both sides, each one was filled with a large fistful of damp salty sandy soil, if this doesn't get cleaned out and treated it will obviously cause severe corrosion in due course, i imagine this particular point will be the demise of many C2's and C3's and others of similar design.

Bear in mind this car is 2 and a half years old 25K miles and in excellent condition underneath, showing no signs of neglect or damage in fact quite the opposite....the alloy wheel hubs surprisingly had a coating of Coppaslip, seems a proper mechanic might have been round this example and i'm glad of it.

There is a similar point at the rear where the rear arch meets the sill but obviously it doesn't get as much splatter so isn't anywhere near so bad.

If you have those plastic inner arches do unclip them and have a nosey about and whilst there give a wash out behind them if you want the car to last.

You often get the same trapped underneath / behind mudflaps. Not sure which word is correct, when you take them off will do. :)

You all have too much time on your hands.

I removed the fornt mudflaps on our 1993 Peugoet 106 this year. They were put on in 1993 when we bought it.

Lots of mud trapped.
Rust : nil.

Why bother?

Not too worried about mud flaps M, anyway who are you calling old.

Mud flaps will trap the mud at the plastic bumper (rear) or the wheelarch itself which is usually heavily coated in paint at that point, it's the stuff that gets behind the inner liner that concerned me, where the paint is at it's thinnest and in theory at least isn't supposed to be nestling perpetually under a pound of salty filth.

Luckily we all feel differently about maintenance.

You can't compare a 106/Saxo especially the Diesel with much else on the road, they were something very special and their like won't be seen again, if they were still being made in their original form they'd be selling like hot cakes.

They look good on paper and they are indeed a good little car...if you dont mind sitting on padded orange boxes and feeling every matchstick dropped on the road.

For it's size 106 was very comfortable and very economical.

Daughters 97 model has airbag, and power steering and central locki and leccy windows.

No one knows how or why to raise a bonnet any more and only at weekends when i become Clarissa would the handles be a problem, though the small offset pedals do cause problems in me high heels..;)

Re C1

Daughter's boyfriend runs the Peugeot flavoured version. Not a bad little car and the three cylinder engine has quite a rorty note in a light coloured kind of way. He's picked me up from the station a couple of times and it's very comfortable in the front - though not quite up to the standard of the 104 I ran at his time of life. Even the rear is tolerable for an hour or so - and the boot's big enough to take a Brompton, which is more than you can say for a Corsa.

It does have a potential mud trap behind the rear wheels though.

I'll have a poke nose under the new Aygo one of the family recently bought, is it obvious Brompton even to an old f... like me..;)

Blind man on a galloping horse......

A sort of 'shelf' which gathers mud in a place where the wheel's spray keeps it nicely damp. Would be the work of minutes to hoe it out as part of the car washing routine.

Seems to be the case of no one but us odd balls here cares any more however i'll have a look for this when i next see the Aygo and advise the owner accordingly..for some reason she listens to me, goodness help her..;)

Not strictly true.

The lancer was bought with the intention of running it till it falls to bits and to delay that aniversary as long as possible without going to silly lengths.

It has arch liners in the front, easily pop out and no apparent mud traps.

The rear however is a different kettle of fish. It has no arch liners in the back. Mud traps under the outside wing lip and a shelf in front of the rear wheels. Much mud, sand and stones hase been hosed from both. The underseal is in tact in these areas but will be kept clear of muck.

Because the manufacturers use crap water based paint these days. The wet grit removes the paint as the mudflap flexes in the airflow, or it did on my Focus.

Ford are notorious for poor paint..

My Yaris is galanised so it matters not... (the bits that rust are all the suspension mountings, etc).

Certainly a weakness of my last Focus and the CC3.

Someone had probably annointed the thing with Waxoyl.

Unless SWMBO did one cold dark night when I was not looking - possible yes, probable no - as she is the first and only owner... :-)

If it's any consolation GB, Cits seem to be pretty good in defying rust these days - not a sign of any on our 10 year old Xantia (or the previous 13 year old BX). Son's C2 is now 6 years old and no sign either. Also (as far as I can recall) has had nothing replaced/repaired except usual service items) in nearly 100k miles.

That's good to know, thanks Phil, though the dealer found the heater fan was noisy on full speed during the PDI and changed that today under warranty, they understandably didn't carry a stock one hence the delay.
The somewhat old fashioned main dealer is doing a fine job so far, this carries on and i shall name them if that's ok with the mods.

I'll be doing a review and some pics in due course for anyone interested.

GB - I think you're at the other end of the county to me but Northants desperately needs a good Cit MD. I'm quite happy using the specialist in town but it was better when we had the choice of Gerald White at Kis as well.

GW's site is finally for sale 9 months after they ceased trading but whoever takes it on will have to start from the ground up. All the truck business will have gone elsewhere as well.

Well we bought the car from Murley Autos Citroen main dealer at Rugby, they have another branch at Stratford on Avon too, Rugby is reasonable for you i think, service dept promised She Who Must they'd look after her with a decent deal for servicing if we don't mind making the trip over.
The whole experience has been good so far, mind you they have seriously good competition in the midlands with Spot of Chasetown Cit MD, possibly my favourite regular delivery point when i was on the cars, you really do go back in time there and no bad thing.

Last time i visited Gerald White's it was a MAN truck dealer, mind you that was in 88..;)

Much the same tale with my Xant Phil. The only rust is on the drivers door skin which is also the only bit of non original body - dent and run on the station car park. Need to have a closer look at the subframes etc, they may prove to be first to go.
