Can you name this source, assuming it's UK.

I thnk you heard wrong. It's a fixed penalty six points and £200 fine

Someone's pulling your leg. It's 6 points and a £200 fine. Those who have held a full licence for under 2 years will lose it if they reach 6 points. www.gov.uk/using-mobile-phones-when-driving-the-law

We don't have 'on the spot' punishments in UK. Guilt has first to be admitted or proven so the jury/bench is sure.

Might be something to be said for a short sharp ban but it needs to be paired with proper and fair process.

There's an Irish (Republic) newspaper article doing the rounds reporting this.

It’s simply a made up story for the gullible. Why people believe this stuff when you can check the facts so easily is beyond me.

I think for non U.K. licence holders the police do have the power to levy on the spot fines, though how often they do I have no idea... but this one in Kent wasn’t that long ago. How they collect the fine is also unclear!

Irish Police / revenue staff collect fines at the roadside - not using cards BUT cash.

Road tax in Eire can be over £2,00 per year and being caught without RFL means the car is put down a side road awaiting the driver to turn up with the readies.

Well I'm all in favour of this being spread far and wide - it may have more impact on the numpties that still do use the 'phones inspite of the current threat of points and fine.

Some 20 years ago, whilst travelling back home on the A14, my French boss was pulled over for speeding. The cops escorted him to Newmarket police station and extracted a fine from him; I don't remember how much it was or how he paid, but I remember he was most impressed by the cool, gentlemanly conduct of the officers.

Its called the Roadside Deposit Scheme which runs alongside Graduated Fixed Penalties.

It was set up to deal with drivers whose address was either questionable or unsuitable for the service of a summons (think Travellers or those living outside UK).

It was also an alternative for arrest based on the above which was/is an option but a bit heavy handed. I think the term they like is 'disproportionate'.

It has to be administered by trained and authorised Officers. Offence committed, Officer dealing identifies from a list the penalty, penalty imposed by way of Fixed Penalty Ticket. If driver unable to pay the vehicle is seized until payment can be pulled together, Officer does not handle money but facilitates deposit through Paypoint. Once paid vehicle released. Ironically the driver is not paying a fine but a deposit and surety that the fine will be paid. Surprisingly the deposit is the equivalent of the Fixed Penalty fine. :))

If non UK licence holder and Endorsable DVLA create 'ghost record' to which the points are added so that subsequently driver can actually be banned. So if database checked during interaction and they have points sitting in background and the latest offence could lead to disqualification then they are arrested and put before court.

It was much needed after foreign drivers were seen to be flouting the system and seen to be in the 'too difficult to do category' and we were being seemingly harshly dealt with on our travels abroad.
