The time has come to place my X plate 2.0 Sport Primera.
It has been a good car. 60K in the last 3 years taking it to 140K with minimal repairs.
35 MPG brim to brim. New MOT and 6 months tax, so I can take my time.
Is 50-60 MPG realistic in a diesel?
My Daily commute is 5 miles urban and 30 miles usually free flowing motorway.
Usually just the 2 of us but needs to be 4 doors and not too cramped in the back for visiting older parents 3 or 4 times a year.
I have been browsing Autotrader. A few contenders in no particular order.
Yaris. Possibly too small.
Auris. Had 1.8 Auto in NZ earlier this year. A bit slow but very nice to drive.
Ceed. Have test driven the lower powered model. Some plastics a bit cheap. The one I would want is over budget. Attracted by the warranty.
Focus. The sensible choice? DMF problems?
307/308. Reliability problems?
Golf.
Leon.
Civic. Reports of eating clutches but a very good engine.
How much discount could I expect off of screen price? I will not PX the Primera.

Discount from a dealer second hand? not much, A years road tax and a full tank of gas is about it.
Skoda Fabia. fits your bill perfectly.
|
Agree about Fabia.
Worth thinking about Kia Rio. Inexpensive, not too small, and moves quite rapidly for a small diesel. No great reliability problems, either, to the best of my knowledge.
|
With the Rio there was one report of a blown turbo (£550 to replace) and one report of rear shocks needed to be replaced.
A few reports of the earlier Rio's scrubbing the insides of the front tyres but this only seems to apply to Rio's without the alloy wheels (possibly narrower tyres).
Other than that no problems reported.

Both of those have been considered.
Is the 1.9 TDi the engine to go for? vRS looks tempting.
A Friend had a Rio diesel. Looking for something else when the dealer handed him the keys.
I was very suprised by the acceleration. The Primera doesn't wake up until around 4K revs.
There was a 2010 Rio in a local dealer for £8K which would have the 7 year warranty.
It was the lowest model with no A/C though.
£550 seems quite reasonable for a turbo including fitting.

Fabia++
I'm definitely turning into a Skoda fan.
BMW have nothing worthwhile to recommend here, the mini's very mini inside for its large exterior and the 1 series i don't get on with.
|
Tried the Rio and didn't like it. The Primera was such a nice place to be following the test drive!
The Fabia was a bit too small in the back/boot.
I have put a deposit on a 08 Ceed LS with the higher powered engine. Test drive included the motorway. Goes pretty well and feels solid.

Good choice, the best engine for that car (I assume you mean the diesel).

Yes it is the diesel. Very quiet.
You have the same car I believe but newer and estate?
