My quote for next years car insurance renewal has arrived .
After having claimed last year I expected an increase but it is larger than I expected, nearly 50%
I have been with them for many years. I made a claim decades ago and another one last year.
( The repair was really good. )
" You have been with us for a number of years. You may be able to get the insurance cover you want at a better price is you shop around"
So that is what I am exploring.
First , will a call from an unhappy customer get the cost slashed back ?
I can hit the compare sites and be bombarded for evermore or talk direct to companies maybe someone like Footman James. LV is often mentioned.
My X type is probably worth £5 K ish and my mileage is now likely to be in the 1K miles p.a.
I have legal cover, NCD protection, one named driver and car hire.
Age approaching 80 maybe loading it ?
Thanks

My Bike Insurance came through @£50 more (L&V) - phoned them up and mentioned I'd quit my job and it magically came down by nearly £100.00 less (now less than £200 for the two bikes I'm using). Mrs RP's insurance with her MX5 saved £90.00 by moving from L&V to QuoteMeHappy via Compare the Market - as well as having their benefits of 2 for 1 cinema and some dining things. If you quote B43LK7 as a voucher code you'll get a £50.00 gift card as will she ;-)

Use a comparison site. I never get unwanted stuff from them. That will then let you know if your renewal quote is in the right ballpark. It may well be that it is - unfortunately your age and the accident will have had an adverse effect on the premium.
|
Not all insurance on comparison sites are the same.
Make sure you are comparing like for like - eg type of car provided if yours is off the road.
I try to stick with a 5 star defacto policy and it usually is only a few £££s extra.

What is a defacto policy?

Been with LV for a few years now, they were cheap with the Volvo and BM, and dont get caned at renewal.
|
Just got my renewal quote with LV, gone up by only £20 to £230 for a 13 year old Golf TDi with legal cover and NCD protection, bit disappointed but I won't be changing for that small difference.
|
Given their fantastic customer service when my partner wrote off an almost brand new car last year it’d take a lot to make me change from LV! And while not statistically significant, that’s not a sample of one...my Father wrote his car off in France the year before, and the customer service was equally good for him.
|
LV are consistently cheapest or near cheapest at renewal time and were good when I had a not my fault accident a few years ago.
Not worth changing unless saving is over £100/year.
|
I have annual multi trip travel insurance with LV. Not the cheapest by far, but I’ve heard and read very good things about them in the event of a claim.
|
Just changed mine from Elephant to LV - had been with Elephant for 15 years as generally no one could get close, but they appeared not to like the 3008 as quoted over £400 - on appeal they could get down to £350, but that was still £100 more than LV. I played with the excess - £400 total appeared to be the best compromise - insuring more cost a lot, whereas increasing it didn't reduce premium a lot.
|
Another vote for LV. Both SWMBO and I are with them.
I think you only find out how good an insurance company is when you make a claim and LV customer service was excellent when I had a write off in floods.
They did try to up my premium last year so I checked on Compare the market and LV came out cheapes t £100 or so less than renewal quote.I spoke to them and they matched the lower price.
Never accept the first quote on any insurance but you have to be very careful to ensure like for like cover.

A big thumbs up for LV from me as well. I foolishly managed to put some minor dents in my car. They had the car collected, repaired and returned within less than a week of the damage taking place. It will be interesting to see the renewal, but It was my fault and I will take my medicine. Within reason anyway.

A slightly tentative thumbs up for LV= from me. Have both cars, house and travel with them.
Worth keeping an eye on things - on wife's car the premium is steadily creeping up but it does cover our two "kids" (in their 30's now, yikes) as named drivers with business use. They also didn't change the premium when notified one of them had had a no-fault write off. Aviva's Premium level cover was quite a lot cheaper but didn't have business cover for the kids.
LV= handled the aforementioned write off - never happened to us before so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I wasn't thrilled by the way it was handled. At first we were told the car was going to be reapired (which is what we wanted) then told, by answerphone meassge "the cheque's in the post". The value given started at £5K, then they admitted they'd done it wrong and changed to £5.5K which was bearable, but I thought £6K would have been fair.
We had someone who keenly wanted the car to repair it (damage was mostly easily replaced hatch door and front bumper) and they and their repairer were evasive about where the car was so it didn't happen.

LV have been my insurer since retiring 5 years ago. "Free" European cover for 180 days, protected NCB , good reviews. At renewal comparison sites havent offere anything tempting enough to chznge.
However my wife hasn't found their quotes so attractive and their advertised multi-car policy is not available via their call centre and was expensive. She is with Saga and allthough it went up n year 2 they were still cheaper than LV.
So there are no hard and fast best buy rules.

Very true. And there is no best cover either. It depends on your own circumstance. My own philosophy for insurance has always to buy only the cover I need so I tend to go for a large excess if I can get a worthwhile discount

"My own philosophy for insurance has always to buy only the cover I need so I tend to go for a large excess if I can get a worthwhile discount"
I couldn't agree more. My philosophy is that insurance is only for a catastrophe such as a write off involving tens of thousands of pounds or a film star claiming I'd driven over his toe and cost him the making of a movie. A few hundred quid's worth of claim just isn't worth it when taking into account excess, arguing over value and so on, followed by losing NCB.
I take the same view at home and don't want accidental damage cover for house contents. If I crack the washbasin, stain the carpet or pour a gin and tonic down the back of the telly then it's down to me and my stupidity.
I usually take the biggest excess available but of course subject to the actual policy premium cost against value.

Interesting. I hate excesses! I'm sure not the most economical way of doing it, but if I'm going to claim I want it to be paid in full, not have salt rubbed into the wound by having to chip in.
That's a negative for LV= - they've steadily ramped up their windscreen excess to £90. I noticed Aviva's premium/premier policy had no wondscreen excess.

My daughter just changed from Hastings (just over £1000) to Quotemehappy (£550). Same level of cover etc.
|
I insure only 2 things - car & house+contents. I buy the cheapest policy from a known insurer & take a larger excess assuming the premium comes down by something sensible.
55 years driving I have only claimed for damage when a 3rd party was involved & I got my high excess back - 5 claims - only one time on the move - I was stationary for the other 4
Scraping my bumper on a low wall, knocking off my wing mirror on a post etc is hand in my pocket & a reminder to be more careful in future.
The advent of the "dent man" & Chipsaway some 30 years ago has been great - I have called on a few times - £50 or £100 sees many a "minor event" disappear.
General Rule on Insurance (excluding life cover)- only take insurance when you cannot afford to replace / repair with your debit card.
|
Insured by LV here as well. Apart from the claims handler losing it with Mrs H and calling her a liar after her accident a few years ago. Car repaired nicely at my choice of garage and little effect on renewal.
I also had good service from Swiftcover when my gardening trailer hitch failed and it scraped a stationary car.
|
LV certainly, after so many votes, will be asked to quote.
NU/Aviva I am not so keen on as I had to invoke my legal cover against them and after many legal letters I discovered NU had cashed a personal a cheque to me.
I could not believe their disbelief and demands all over £100.
Thanks all.

At 80 and doing under 1000 miles a year , how much is he insurance ,service Mot and other costs , can you not use your Free bus pass and taxis and save money ?
Anyway , I recently bought insurance for my 17 yr old and tried some specialist Youngster companies , inc Marmalade . I enquired for it before he passed , to give me an idea on whether the vehicle and insurance was affordable . The insurance was about 1700 , but I didn’t take it out . Then when he passed , it went up to 5,000k !!
I and SWMBO are with Direct Line , never had a problem and they say they give us a discount for multiple vehicles.
I got a quote of 2,600 without a black box ,or 2150 with a box for 6,000 miles .
I then worked out he needed 10,000 miles , and was shocked that 3 days later even with the increased mileage , it had gone to 2400 and 1880 ........apparently it could change by the hour .

Just received my annual renewal from LV=-it's gone up! By £7.17.
|
henry, you would be better off getting rid of the Jag and using Uber, or having an account with one of the local minicab firms, wouldn't you?
I/we have been using LV for several years for both cars. I find that a friendly discussion at renewal time can bring the price down significantly. I use a comparison site first of all to get an idea of where we should be, and go from there, but always seem to come back to LV.
