I wonder if this could actually be made to work

Perhaps judging by the repeated thefts it can. I know that Nitrous can be used to boost engine performance, I just wonder how Entonox compares in composition and effect to that used in racing.

Pretty sure Entonox is 50% oxygen, 50% N2O - so it's impossible to kill yourself with it unlike pure N2O.
If you mess about so you could get adequate flow to boost the engine, I'd be suspicious the extra pure O2 would cause upper cylinder meltdown.

I think nitrous oxide wrecks car engines anyway.

Depends on the car, good friends with a NOx convert, he had 50hp shots in a corsa (yup, 100% boy racer material) and to be fair, that was ace fun.
He's now got a system you can change the shot size from 50hp to 150hp in a 330i.
(the corsa went to 140k miles, 38k with nitrous). 140k's good going for anything with a GM sticker ;-) -- badge snobbery from a Skoda driver, canny knock it...

Some good publicity there from the Press.
Now the rest of the country's scrotes will start doing it........those that can read, at least !
