 Expensive car keys - Zero
Ah not what you thought, Zero has lost his bimmer key and is whining about the extortionate replacement cost. Well NO

THESE are expensive car keys.

senturionkey.com/supercar-sync.php

Start (that's the lowest price) is £16400 up to £93,500......

In fairness Bimmer keys are pretty reasonable. Top tip - keep keys out of reach of Spaniel pup.

I can remember losing the key to my 1966 Austin mini whilst on holiday back in th sixties. No problem since I had taken a note of the key number conveniently stamped on the key. Popped into a nearby petrol station where they had a rack of BMC keys in numerical order. I guess I paid a few shillings for the spare.

Or just ask another Mini owner if you can borrow their spare.

When I was doing A-levels, three of us had Minis of 1975-1980 vintage. All could be opened with any car's key, and two could be started. :-) We used to move each other's cars as a practical joke.

Early Ford's were just the same. I could unlock and start my mates Mk2 Escort with my motorbike key. I'm sure someone said at the time Ford only had 4 different patterns of key.

You get them back - after a while - don't you?

They are chewed a lot, not usually swallowed.

That must be the worst car key design ever. It would do a lot more for security (personal and car) if it looked like an everyday watch.

As it is, there are parts of the world where you risk getting your arm chopped off.

Assuming it is actually a car key. I can't work out from the website what it's for.

It is a key, here it is in action...

But WTF you'd want such a thing is quite beyond me.

Actually they also offer a bespoke service which starts at £150,000.

AS far as I can see it is a car remote key which offers no functionality beyond the remote you got with the car, but you can wear it on your wrist.

I assume that if you are the sort of person that would like one of these then you can wear it on your right wrist and rely on kinetic energy to keep it charged. Do be careful not to over charge it.

Actually, given the way most cars are opened and started these days, incorporating that into a functioning smart watch is a fabulous idea, and a logical useful extension.

The one I pointed at in this thread, is not.

Z, would that be a more secure option to keyless entry, perhaps as a substitute to the standard key fob, or would it be equally hackable

Keyless entry is not "hacked" per say, but is an RF physical relay, IE you need the kit, you need to be there close.

The watch I guess could be purely wifi, so would inherently be more secure with encryption and passwords. Tho the fact the thief would need to assault you and rip your watch off your arm, may not be a desirable alternative.

I *thought* that was functionality that BMW (well, for a phone, though presumably it’d work on a smart watch) already offered...

This service is not available for your BMW

I can unlock it with a smart phone, but the app is not available for a smart watch, which lacks many of the required android APIs

Yes, I get the same. I *think* it works with the new 7 series... I can unlock my car with my phone, but only by using the app. I can’t just walk up to it and open it. Odd that this phone thing is android, when eveything else supported by idrive is iOS?

BMW's insistence only only supporting Apple car play and not Android Auto is a deep annoyance. They did say that they will never provide AA support, but the rumour mill says the backlash is sufficient for a change of mind.

Bit miffed that they don't advertise being able to cope with Jaguar. After all, Jaguar is a posh brand. Isn't it?

:)

Perhaps it's only for cars that cost more than the key.

Probably the cheapest key on the market! - would work just as well if your car had voice -recognition ignition!

Mmmmm. About 15 times in my case.

Now this is a great idea, standard watch, smart watch strap, would be ideal for car makers to produce car keys on watch straps.

Techmoan reviewed one of those smart watch straps a week or two back.

I don't think he was overwhelmed, to be honest, for what that's worth.
