"People will be able to walk through one of the country's longest underground road tunnels before it opens to traffic ...on an open day on 14 May next year."

I'll wait till it opens thanks.
I like the idea of "The steering group..." for a motor tunnel...
|
Well I have walked the length on the top, so I might as well do it through the bottom.

I know that area well pre tunnel, is it relatively unspoilt up top with the only excavtions at the the entrances?
>> so I might as well do it through the bottom. >>
Oo er ;-)

I'd quite like to do it, though its a bit far to go... I always regret not walking through the Snow Hill/Moor Street tunnel in Brum before they relaid the railway...
Have walked through the old Botanic Gardens railway tunnel in Glasgow back in the 80s - seariously creepy coming across a station in the middle of the tunnel...

You may as well walk through the Tyne Tunnel for the speed you get through!
Is this new tunnel a toll tunnel then? Never fails to irritate me that the tyne tunnel is the only tolled tunnel in England (I think anyway).

No it is a straight through job.
When completed the trip south from Tibbets Corner underpass (SW19) to Portsmouth will have no traffic light and just one roundabout ( in the countryside).
|
Its got a pedestrain/equestrian light at the robin hood roundabout...... ;)

Never stopped for it ( never seen it working) I guess too busy watching the cameras just prior to the roundabout
|
I have stopped the traffic there a few times to walk or cycle across.
Before the lights were installed it was very risky just making a dash for it.
Limited visibility and, although 40mph for most, I believe it is 105mph for footballers.

So you're the blighter who always turns the lights to red whenever I drive down there!!
I cannot for the life of me see why they had to install these ludicrous pedestrian/equestrian lights on this busy main trunk road when there is a perfectly good footbridge just yards away!!
OK, so the footbridge is not appropriate for horses, but the stables has got the whole of Richmond Park to trott the horses around in - why do they have to cross the road as well? And I dread to think what these lights must have cost us! What next, lollipop ladies on the M25?!
They make my blood boil!! [rant over]
|
Calm down now.
I've only been there a few times so it must have been my twin brother!
Like Henry I've never been stopped by it when driving so you must be very unlucky.
The horses need to cross the road to see their friends on Wimbledon Common.
The crossing cost around £500,000.
I doubt we will see lollipop ladies on the M25.
:-)

Do the ones under the Thames at Dartford not count as tolled tunnels?
|
>> Is this new tunnel a toll tunnel then?
I've tried to find out without success. Colleagues think it is, but they have no proof. There is no sign of toll booths as yet. If there is a tool, I'd bet on a stream of cars making a short cross country dash and creating chaos on the small roads.
|
No, it's not a toll tunnel.
|

apart from the M25 dartford crossing.
|
Do the Mersey Tunnels count? I think the tolls pay for the Mersey Tunnels Police more than anything.

hobby, fascinating info and pictures on the old Botanic Garden railway. I believe there is a whole load of hidden treasures underground in Glasgow, including the old railway line to Glasgow Cross that is apparently all still there in situ.
I also am led to believe that there are various tunnels under George Square and possibly even from the Clyde direct intot he old court?
Where my office is in Glasgow, if you are in the basement you can hear and feel the Underground trains. I have often wondered what distance there is between us and the train!

"Walkers to examine Hindhead's £371m tunnel "
Why? To see if it's a good place to sell crisps?
|
Tickets sold on day 1.

It is still planned to open the tunnel for traffic in July.
