And now I understand why they had a centre speedo!
IIRC Ford spent many hours trying to understand how they could be made for the selling price. They had not worked on the basis that every car made a loss.
When did they change the body shell to internal seams? From memory the original used to suffer water penetration on all the external joints, amongst other issues.? Any Mini experts here?

I don't know much about 1960s car production, but it looked pretty advanced for its day. How did it compare to others of a similar era I wonder?
|
Very nice. Brought back memories of Mum's 1959 car. Red with a white grille. Bought new from a garage in Harrogate.
The so-called rustproofing seen in the film didn't seem to work all that well...
|
Was the seams thing sorted in around 68 ?

IIRC it was the front floor seam that overlapped such that the inside was above the outside. By reversing it the problem was resolved. It doesn't make sense to me.

I enjoyed that.
At the end of Reel 3 they show the family off on holiday to France; Ferry from Dover, to Boulogne I assume.
Any idea how long it took in those days (1961) or how much it cost?

Now that I am trapped in a YouTube loop of "Up Next" and "You might also like", thanks Zero, I watched this from 2000, nothing new, but interesting I thought.

My pleasure, not sure how much of my life youtube has stolen..
|
Sherlock, re the seams, all original Minis were built with external seams. Some customisers deseamed them but it was not standard.
The current MINI was built without seams from the outset but, name aside, it has little in common with the original.
|
Probably too much of mine. I’ve just watched it whilst drying off in the sun on Playa del Duque after a swim. Mahou time soon

Wasting my life watching these old youtube films, you see a number of Renault Dauphines. Whatever happened to them, did they all rust away worse than BL stuff?
I rode a motorbike into the back of one and I came off better.

Lord yes, they were complete rust buckets.

I rode my Ducatti 350 desmo into the a mini that pulled out of a side road in front of me.
I went over the top and landed in the forecourt of an ambulance station, the bike hit between the power/drivetrain and the firewall, damn near cutting the front off the mini.

Have you ever considered visiting Specsavers? Minis, buses, whatever next?
;-)
|
Have you seen the original mini? its very small. And in 1972 a Ducati desmo was very fast,

But in 1972, they were very fast

Might have been, but a properly sorted Honda would still be going long after these rusted away
|
I remember liking the Laverda Jota and the Benelli Sei. And that little Moto Guzzi thing; Le Mans, was it?
|
Now you're talking. A Jota is on my list. Guzzis are lovely now.
