Diesel Cars Are Much Cleaner Than Most Electric - Shiny
In the last few years, electric vehicles have seen a significant rise all over the world. It was such a big hit that the biggest automakers in the market started making plans to go electric. It is also expected that very soon, we can see a 100% switch from diesel cars to EVs. One of the biggest reason to universally choose EVs is the environmentally friendly nature which is a much-needed trait these days. A German automotive consultancy Berylls Strategy Advisors, who describe themselves as ‘the only relevant top management consulting firm working exclusively for the auto industry’ is saying that EV might not be as eco-friendly as the industries think it is.

The electric cars do not release carbon emissions, but the problem lies in the production of their lithium-ion batteries. The energy required to make the cells result in a high carbon footprint. It is so high that the automotive experts have estimated that an electric vehicle in Germany would take more than 10 years to break even with an efficient combustion engine’s emissions. Dr. Jan Burgard, managing partner at Berylls said in a statement, “Electric cars appear to be the panacea and reduce emissions by 35 %. After all, electric vehicles do not emit any carbon dioxide while driving – at least that is a widely held opinion.”
Burgard further added, “However, from well to wheel, they do not improve the situation. After all, electricity generation – including for electric cars – is still strongly dependent on fossil fuels in many EU countries. The climate does not care whether carbon dioxide comes from the exhaust pipe or whether it is released when lignite is burned to generate electricity or in energy-intensive battery production.” The study states that building a 500 kilograms EV car battery or bigger in a fossil fuel-powered factory will result in 74% more carbon emissions than producing a traditional vehicle. Burgard says that it is time to consider the diesel approach if the world wants to reach the environmental targets of 2030 EU CO2.

Burgard said, “I miss a technology-agnostic discussion of available solutions, which also includes the potential of the currently demonized diesel engine. We will need it to achieve the EU’s climate targets.” Several others are not convinced with the research report and have lashed it on Twitter. People stated that the report is biased and is coming from the place from where the funding arrives. However, it is essential to consider the dirty process of making a battery and make appropriate adjustments accordingly. While energy companies are moving towards greener initiatives, producing a cleaner battery might also be possible soon.

Stupid story.

There are 7 coal Power Stations in the UK planned to reduce consistently.

There are 12.4 million diesel cars which we need to get rid of, not build more.

15% of the UK's energy last year was wind. I guess reports like this contributed to that.

Wonderful Engineering appear to be 9 Asian men and women, with an advert with a white American dude, and an address in Bath Street, Glasgow, England.

Arguing to keep diesel cars because of how batteries may or not be made (which you could reduce emissions for at the factory) is an apple and oranges comparison. We were duped into thinking EU6 diesels were so clean and they are not. Petrol only slightly better.

The CO2 argument won out over NOx but the bigger problem is still particulates.

Just asking....

Apart from the obvious particulates coming from the engine there's supposedly a stupidly high 'unseen' amount coming from both brakes and tyres both of which are present on electric cars, is there any comparison between the ICE and electric for these?

Difficult to quantify.

EVs don't use friction braking anywhere near as much as ICE as they initially use the motor to slow the car and recharge the battery.

Tyre wear is much more variable - some think that EVs being heavier will create more tyre crumb/particulate - my B250e has done about 14k miles and the front Michelins have at most a few thousand useful miles left.

On a 180hp FWD car this is probably what would be expected from a similarly powerful diesel FWD car?

Interesting story here from ACEA, the trade body of car makers

The new Euro VI diesels are indeed cleaner than you think..

That seems to say the lithium-ion batteries in a Tesla are using nickel and graphite??? So they're not lithium-ion then?

Lithium is only a small part of the battery chemistry.

Heard the boss of Scottish Power on Radio Scotland this morning discussing a new tie up with Arnold Clark. They have produced a new charger pack that will be sold with all Elec cars to charge from the house and make things easier.

Seemed strange as I assume they all come with these anyway?

My late mother once received a telephone call from a supplier of conservatories asking if they could come round, measure up and quote for one. She readily agreed, saying that she'd always rather fancied one and yes, he could visit that evening. If the guy ever turned up will remain a mystery as she never did get a knock on the door from him at her second floor flat...

The exhaust fume coming from diesel car is indeed harmful. Don't think anyone is willing to smell that.

Even if battery manufacturer causes pollution that is limited to a specific place. The exhaust from cars will be all over the place.

So I don't agree that diesel cars are cleaner than electric.

It is same as arguing NHS is not free because we pay NI - which is true but at the point of service it is free.

The same as the mining pollution is OK because it's in Indonesia, not here?

Car is taxed on what coming out of its exhaust - not what coming out of battery making factory.

So all Arnold is doing is getting commission to sign you up to Scottish Power, but with a load of whiz pop bang to fool the customer.

I have Economy 7 from Scottish Power and have been waiting for 18 months for a Smart Meter. I therefore question how SP are going to manage to get an app to charge an EV on an alternative lower-cost tariff by smartphone when they can't/won't deliver me a Smart Meter.

I feel much better since I've sent SP a sneering but theraputic tweet on the subject.

and cleaner than a lot of PHEVs ?

" Government-subsidised plug-in cars may never have been charged.

Tens of thousands of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) bought with generous government grants may be burning as much fuel as combustion-engine cars.
Many drivers may never have unwrapped their charging cables, "
