I remember the late Tony Pond rallying a V8 Vitesse on the Manx Rally many moons ago. I think it must have been before he drove the Metro 6R4

LHD :(
Tuned & drove a fair few :(
Best of the SD1's but ... I still wouldn't want one.
|
I'd rather have a P6 with V8 engine.
|
SD1 is better to look at and a more practical car, having been in both and driven the SD1 a few years ago. Either one would be a very nice classic car to have.
|
Wouldn't it just. 190 bhp through the rear wheels...retro ! Lovely cockpit design on both the P6 and SD1
|
Had a SD1 many moons ago - still remember the jack points made of square tubing at the rear corners.
2.6 engine was infamous for poor longevity - with development it could have pushed out more power than the standard 3.5 V8.
|
I had a 2.6 SD1 several years ago. I quite liked the car, but it was not reliable.
Several years later, about 2001, when I was running an airport car service, I decided to replace the Ford Scorpio that I had. With what?
I debated an E Class Mercedes 320CDI or the Rover 75... Hmm...
Wasn't I glad I went for the Merc!
|
I drove a 2.0 SD1 years ago and for what it was, not a bad old thing. Didn't realise at the time that it was as rare as it was, only slightly more numerous than the diesels and I think there is only a handful of them on the road.
|
The 75 wasn't a bad car at all, as long as one didn't get the miserable 1.8 K series. The diesel was BMW. The Merc was still a better car.

Don't want to be pedantic, heaven knows, but really. Tube is not square.
|
Square tube is box section.
|
I saw that as well and nearly posted, what deterred me was the dictionary definition of "tube" circular it says !
I still think that square tube is right..!
|
tube
noun
1.
a long, hollow cylinder of metal, plastic, glass, etc
cylinder
noun
1.
a solid geometrical figure with straight parallel sides and a circular or oval cross section.

"Chube" seems to be the norm on the television these days.
|
That's because TVs don't have tubes any more.

Piece about the Vitesse, including it being the first to cover the IOM TT course at an average speed of more than 100 mph driven by Tony Pond.

I recall Pond crashing his Mini 64 into a tree a few moments after setting off in a rally! Even more embarrassing was that it was on television at the time.
Still find it staggering that Mark Higgins drove the Subaru WRX STI TT Attack car, in what would seem a death defying feat, during his follow up record breaking lap of the Isle of Man TT circuit just over two years ago. He set the record at an average speed of 128.730 mph (17 min 35.139 for the 37.73 mile course).

That was the next generation of Vitesse, not the one for sale in this thread.
None the less the vid of Ponds drive on the IoM is always worth another look.

Of course Higgins was in a more or less race prepared WRC, and Pond was in a more or less showroom car.

Either way a staggering achievement and even more so in view of the length and diversity of the TT course.
But rally drivers (and co-drivers) are truly remarkable and extremely brave individuals - my admiration for them is boundless.

They're also made in unheard of places these days too.
On the back of mine it says built in antenna, wherever that is?
|
Handsome motor, was then, still is.
|
A guy I knew many moons ago had a new SD1 Vitesse with a twin turbo upgrade (protech or turbo-technics?). He was a couple of years older than me and his father bought him anything he wanted. I was incredibly jealous until he told me that it spent more time in the workshop with overheating problems than it did on the road.
Seriously fast at the time though.
|
I once met Tony Pond, long before he moved to top class rallying.
Odd fellow, I thought.

All a bit bizarre, lodges, ceremonies and the like! You can also get a degree!
