"The hard shoulder and lane one have been so badly burnt that they're going to need to be resurfaced."

The M40 is getting almost as bad as the A34 is for accidents and incidents.

... and yet it is usually considerably less busy than other roads in my (limited) experience.

Maybe concentration slips as it's easier to drive...

Friends who divide their time between some place beyond Abergavenny and London ignore the M4 and always use the M40.

Shortest route from here to daughter in Plymouth is A43/M40/A34/Oxford>Swindon/M4/M5

In practice quickest is to join M40N at Gaydon then M42>M5>A38. No need to drop below 60+ from Gaydon until leaving A38 at Weston Mill.

Heading south (for whatever reason) it is the default option for me. Odd on a bike, it seems to take ages to get from the M25 to Birmingham...I think it's to do with the reduced mental activity in comparison to the M6/M1 option less traffic more time to focus on counting junctions and road signs...

What the range of the bike? I imagined you'd be stopping on the way.

Last trip topped up in Cobham Services on the M25, normally I'd top up at Beaconsfield but it had run out of petrol (again) and managed to get to Shrewsbury services. My old RT could get from Dover to Beaconsfield and then back home. That bike had incredible range on a large tank combined with 55mpg (at motorway speeds)..
