I have ordered a new car that I should get some time in November. However, on this occasion the dealer will not automatically transfer my plate on to the new car.
Apparently, I have to put my personal plate on retention and let the dealer have the new log book so that they can tax my new car with my personal plate. Has anyone else done this and how straightforward was it?
Previously, I have just had to inform my insurance company that I am changing my car on a certain date and I am covered for both cars. What is the timescale for informing the DVLA and putting the plate on retention and receiving the log book?

If you do it online, less than a week. They will tell you to change plates immediately and the V5 will follow in days. You will also be able to print an authorisation for new number plates.
