We are looking at PSA cars (another current thread) fitted with the 110 HDi engine at the moment among others, this engine has the FAP fitted.

I would like thoughts, experiences and some technical information about these if possible please, up till now we've avoided these sorts of things like the plague but to get the low costs with good performance and economy seems we'll have to go kicking and screaming into the new age, and it does concern me.

1. How does it work?
2. Will it be an expensive pita in time?
3. Does it require specific driving as DPF to keep it healthy?
4. Is the fluid user replaceable, or is it specialist indy or main dealer with me pants down?
5. Can it be removed and would this be a good thing?
6. If it does die can i buy a new one aftermarket and bung it in or is this something best kept OE and indeed would the dealer have to fit and calibrate?

Navy's discovery that his Ceed Diesel has neither DPF or indeed DMF is rumbling constantly in the back of my mind.;)

Update - The 2011 (from September) model Cee'd will have a DPF. The current one is Euro 4, the new one will be Euro 5 spec.

Missed the edit by an hour or so. :-)

The discontinued Cee'd 2.0 crdi has both a DPF and DMF.

Continuing with the Kia thread..;) 2011 Magentis is striking looking at least the pics i've seen, hope they make it like that, looks like you got the right model Navy before the dreaded DMF gets added.

So far seems others know as much as i do about FAP's which isn't much, maybe we've all been avoiding them like the plague.

Google for EOLYS for a full explanation. I have a 110 307 and the system has given me no trouble in 6yrs/60K miles; perhaps I have been lucky! I haven't even needed a refill/top up in that time.

Been reading constantly about the things thismorning D and i'm still not really any wiser though more concerned, if Screwloose was around he'd issue dire warnings enough to freeze the blood in our veins, probably just as well he isn't though he is still missed by many including me.

Seems they can go on for years with some maintenance around the 70 to 80K mark, consisting of topping up with the (liquid gold by the price) muck and possible replacement/regen of the FAP....steam cleaning seems to work for some.

Hopefully by the time it starts to play up some clever chap will have devised a new way to deal with the things permanently.

The thing that bothers me Re: French cars, is the electrics/electronics, and I speak from experience.
Having said that, the FAP system seems pretty well thought out + there are literally millions of cars on the road with that system, so (as usual) we only get to hear about the minority that give any grief.
If you can find a 1owner full pain dealer serviced jobbie, I think you'll be on a winner.

GB - you may not be any wiser but you are much better informed! Just jesting! BTW you are right about Screwloose, he was a great asset and a mine of really good info!

FAP is basically a Diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the exhaust, regeneration and maintenance of which is aided by this EOLYS fluid priced to keep the designer of the system in fine wines and women for ever.
