Hi all,
Found deep in garage, a box of 10 Champion BN-9Y spark plugs. All new in a box, individually packaged. Probably date from 80's or 90's.
Tried e-bay with 99p start, no takers.
I will try freecycle, but don't hold out much hope.
so,
1) Does anyone want them (pick up or pay postage).
2) Any ideas how I can get rid? I don't want to sling them as they are surely useful to someone?
Cheers,
Alex.

If you can list the cars they fit you might have more luck on ebay/freecycle, hard to find out because everythings designed to find the spark plug type for the car, not the other way round.
I can't vouch for the accuracy as this is just what I found from enthusiasts web sites.
Renault 14 1.2l
Sherpa, 1700 1700 cc 1984-89 Engine Code 17V
Sherpa, 2000 1994 cc 1984-89 Engine Code 20V
Volvo 340, don't know which engine.

Not suprised there were no takers!
|
i would never fit champion
would rather pierce my eyes with needles
|
|
The "Double Copper" ones I used to fit to my Capri in the early 90s were good.

|
Nowt wrong wi' champions.

Champion Rovers. Now their top player might be worth 70k a week
Whatever................

I'm with Bb, I'd rather have a digital rectal or a root canal jobbie than use BN9Y in my car.

I am trying to think for the life of me what we used to use in the old Yam' RD350 (air) NGK something or other, but the bike used to eat them.
|
Cleaned up some old boxes in the cellar found brand new points and condensors, NGK spark plugs and Ht leads all went in the bin because there of no use anymore & anybody with a old motor will know where to get new parts from a shop.
So to that man sling em in the bin as with 5/16 nuts and bolts metric is the way forward and any whitworth spanners bin them too.
|
Diff'rent strokes, BB.
I used to carry a sweety jar full of Champs that had come out of serviced cars, cleaned up and re-set. Used to go to lots of non-starters...take out the Bosch, Ford, Vaux, Beru or whatever and put 4 Champs in........90% guaranteed to start on the button.
My Velocette will only run on Champions...Z9Y....can't even get it to fire on Japs.
Pity the N9Ys won't fit thev Jowett, too long...I'd have had them !
I'll take any Whitworth spanners , though.

I think they used to go in BL 'O' series engines (Princess, etc) and maybe the Rover 2600, etc.
Having said that, I wouldn't touch them either.

We always had a jar of secondhand, but cleaned, gapped, and perfectly serviceable plugs on our breakdown truck.
Funny how some drivers resented being asked to pay something for a secondhand plug or two, even though I'd just got them going at two in the morning.

I'd always take it with a pinch of salt when told the story of a correctly graded Champion that was rubbish. Then I had my aircooled flat four Citroen GS. I abandoned it more than once when it wouldn't start at the end of a day at work.... until told that was typical of their starting on Champions. Sure enough changed for NGK and all was fine.

that list is like the raising of the mary rose

Chas- many thanks, that is extremely helpful.
I will lob them back onto ebay in case there is an owner of one of those illustrious vehicles in need of some cheap sparks.
Alex.

Renault Fuego - not seen one of those in years. A rare motor even in its day.
|
|
Oh the Renault Fuego. Hard to believe now but I used to dream of owning one as a teenager.

I see on Wikki that it came with a couple of "firsts" - keyless ignition and steering wheel controls
|
|
I wanted an Opel Manta. I got a Cavalier 1.6L...in yellow. Drove alright, looked horrible.
|
Renault fuego, and the opel manta,
I would find garage space for both of them even now. Great lookers.
|
I quite liked the glass tailgate on the Fuego. Stylish alloys too IIRC.
Came too late to capture any of the Capri/Manta market though - hot hatches were the thing by the early 80s.
|
Fuego was a reasonable attempt. Looked great particularly the TX or GTX versions in dark metallic with those lovely half moon alloys.
The 2.0 engine was the best, very torquey and fast with good economy.
For those who wanted to drive around making a lot of noise, they did a diesel but it luckily never came to the UK.
The rest wasn't so good. Basically it was a Renault 18 with sexy clothes on, so a chassis set up for comfort rather than handling. It had particularly un-sporty low-geared steering. You got early 1980s build quality and (lack of) rust prevention. The ex-husband of an ex-neighbour of ours had a black GTX when they were new and when he came to visit his daughter every Sunday you could almost see more rust compared to the previous week…
Yes they rotted badly as did the R18 but they probably weren't any worse than many other cars of that era.
Apparently that rear curved window was very expensive to replace.
It didn't have keyless ignition. It was one of the first cars to have the PLIP system but you still got a conventional key for the ignition.
A Scirroco was better built but the Fuego's trump card was that marvellous 2.0 engine.

"A Scirroco was better built but the Fuego's trump card was that marvellous 2.0 engine."
I had that same engine in an 18TX and you are so right, it was a peach. The TX also had the Fuego's stiffer suspension so it did handle quite well too.

It's the only Renault that we spotty youths gave a second glance to. Ford managed it so much better with the Capri, any sporting Escort even a Granada could be blinged up to look good.
