Do red cars still fade to that awful dull powdery pink colour?

Reason I ask is I have spied a trully stunning lustrous red Polo for nicole. Will it be Barbera Cartland pink in 5 years time?

Wasn't it mainly Vauxhalls that turned pink? I had a 04 reg mx5 in bright red that was fine. Have never seen a pink (ie ex- red ) VW.

Slightly off thread, but I could never understand why there seems such a demand for it and why my local Sainsburys has a sign over an aisle saying "Polish Bleach". What's wrong with the British stuff ? What's so special about the eastern european type ?

Look closer in Tesco, there's polish mineral water up for grabs too.

I had a Tornado red Golf. The roof and bonnet needed cutting at 6 years.
Depends on how the car is looked after too.
My current car which is a similar red to the Golf is six at the end of next month, garages when not in use and waxed once a year. Paint is still in pretty good condition just a few stone chips on the bonnet.

I can certainly bring to mind "pink" Fords, VWs and BMWs. I don't think the uv fading discriminates against certain manufacturers. A modern car is probably ok. It's like yellow, they stopped selling it until they sorted the problem (chrome in it) then they started selling it again once the problem was sorted.

SWMBO sister has just bought a metallic red Toyota Auris. I'm hoping it will not fade like her N reg Corolla which turned very Barbara Cartland in its old age.

VAG red should be fine :-) Nice wee motor.

"Wee" being the operative word. Still if that's what she wants......Why don't you get her a proper car ?

Don't see why that should be, Craig. I've seen plenty of pink Golfs and Polos, and presumably VW red absorbs as much high-energy blue and UV light as anyone else's.

(At least, this is what I've always presumed was the mechanism for fading. And I don't think a clear topcoat will stop it. I think my red 1996 Saab 900 had a clear coat, but I've seen some very sad looking pink ones lately. On the other hand, our red 2000 Fabia was garaged for 8 years and showed no sign of fade when we passed it on.)

VAG red is protected from UV fading by their clearcoat, has been since the mid 90's i think too?

The Polish round here have all gone home (the Polish shop shut, but it never sold Polish polish)) so all we have left to polish the cars are the Lithuanians.

if it is a recent car then no it wont fade as it will have water based paint with an acrylic lacquer on to stop it bleaching
no red cars would fade as said if thet were polished every now and then
interestingly its only the poor/lazy and or teachers that seem to never polish their cars

I had a 1985 red Sierra that faded.

There's a red minibus owned by a hotel near me which is only a few years old and that has faded.

I wouldn't risk buying a glossy red car again.

A deepish red, almost maroon metallic probably wouldn't fade.

Clearcoat red should be fine.

I had a red Ford Escort XR3i from 1984 to 1997. It didn't fade at all, but it spent much of its life under a carport or in a garage. It eventually turned orange and flakey in structural places and we got £500 in P/E.

My 10 year old Focus was solid red and didn't fade at all. I did use a colour protect was every year, but other than that no special treatment.

I don't think modern paints fade at all, tbh.

On a side note, a paint company chemist once told me there was something in white gloss paint that was activated by sunlight to keep the paint white. Unfortunately when there is no direct light (as in my bathroom) the paint gets a yellowy tinge quite quickly.

The flat red '96 Mondeo I've just scrapped still cleaned up like new with no sign of fading. I owned it for over six years and all it got was the occasional bucket of soapy water. I put it's long paint life down to the fact that the one previous owner probably polished it regularly.

I would imagine VAG of all manufacturers would now lacquer their flat red after the well known issues they had with their Tornado Red in the 80s.

I know Mazda started lacquering their Classic Red in 2001 and renamed it Eternal Red. I would imagine most manufacturers did something similar.

If the car's at a dealer ask him to give it a small wipe with some polish - see if any red comes off on the cloth, then you'll know.

My burgundy red Triumph 2000 never faded. It justed rusted away leaving the paint.

...My burgundy red Triumph 2000 never faded...

I had an estate in the same colour - solid, although I think some manufacturers were offering metallics by then.

Rust wasn't a big problem with mine, although I only had it a year or so.

Nice car.

The only pink you'll get on a new red car with water based paint and lacquer finish is in the area of a poor quality repair.
