Cars sold with wrong engines in - Skoda
It must happen. An advert for a 2.0 Mondeo that's actually secretly had a 1.8 transplanted in being sold and the new owner probably not realising till much later, if at all?

I've never seen anything on any of the forums i visit though, but i can't help but think it must happen?

Anyone ever heard of an example?

Seen this quite a few times. The most unusual case I saw was an add on Ebay for a 1996 Ford Ka (one of the first examples) the add didn't mention anything unusual but the pics of the bonnet did. The engine was the 1.3 HCS engine, not the 1.3 Endura it should have been.

Seen lots of Corsa 1.2s advertises as "got 2.0 litre redtop in it but DVLA think its 1.2 so cheap insurance init" adverts.

I went to look at a 2.0 16v Calibra a few years ago. Under the bonnet was an 8v. The seller was adamant it had 16 valves because of the 16V badge on the rear. Turns out the previous owner had duped him into thinking it was the 16v model when he bought it.

Similar story. Bought a VW with a 16v badge on the boot lid, only to find out later it was the eight valve 1.6-litre petrol engine.

Fortunately the insurance company and the garages didn't get it wrong, whilst the bonus was that torque was much superior at lower to medium revs than the 16 valve unit.

They wont be lauging when its insurance claim time, however its null and void becasue it has been modified without informing the insurance co or the DVLA.

However only Null and void for the owner. 3rd Party liability still stands.

The engine was the 1.3 HCS engine

so
1/ you would suss straight away
2/the ka is 4 injecter rather than single point injecter
3/the manifold wouldn't fit as the endura has the cat on the downpipe
4/engine mounting pick up points also different

Was one of these stories in a classic car mag a year or two back, owners had bought an old T2 VW camper and discovered it had a 1.2 engine instead of the usual 1.6 (which ain't no flyer at the best of times)

Lots of ignorant / unscrupulous people, including traders, were trying to palm off 115 bhp Golf PD TDIs as the later 130 variant when I was looking for ours. The 130 engine replaced the short-lived 115 in late 2001, but there were loads of people insisting their 2000 X plate example had the later engine, despite the fact that it hadn't even been released when their car was registered.

Easy to do, I suppose. Same basic (visually similar) engine, same 6 speed box, same trim levels, same red "DI" badging. Only a check of the engine code, and a drive (for the experienced) would give the game away.

My dad also had a 105 Jetta for a 6 mth lease a couple of years ago and that went pretty well, but not as much as the 110 Octavia non-PD he has now. Great engines

My Mark 2 Escort 1.3 engine blew up and I got a reconditioned one put in but was so gutless I was convinced it was either a 1.1 or the 950cc engine from the Fiesta!!

Thats only a matter of degrees of gutlessness tho. The original was no ball of fire.,

In those days my prerequisite for an engine was that it had to be able to accelerate comfortably up the "Boags Brae", a steep hill coming up from M74. Nowadays any car can do this comfortably , my 1.3 was able to do it but the engine I was left with seriously struggled in comparison.

The strain of hauling your escort up boags brae is probably what did it in.

Zero, what did my engine in was the naivety of a 19 year old.
Used to take the Escort into work in Glasgow before traffic got really heavy so in there in 15 mins.
Coming oput at rush hour the journey took longer and I used to get a warning light on the dashboard every so often, which I ignored.

I found out that was the light to warn me I had no water in the radiator, my oil was reaching temperatures of that volcano and then just before the Easterhouse cut off on the M8, in the outside lane, my car went bang and large plumes of white smoke came pouring out the back, front, and everywhere else.

I then had the joy of getting the car over to the hard shoulder and then walking up the slip into Easterhouse (which is not quite shall we say the most salubrious areas of town) and using a phone in the first pub I came to (you know the type where you walk in and everyone turns round and stops talking)

After that my girlfriend nicknamed my car Ivor the Engineless Escort....

Haha i was 22 before i had my 3rd car that could do that! My wee L reg 1.1 fiesta couldn't overtake an HGV on that hill, tried it once but learned my place in the pecking order and pulled back in :-)

EDIT: Streetview doesn't do it justice --> bit.ly/b9ER8Z

On a slightly related note, I bought a car that the dealer had marked up incorrectly and I'd guess priced incorrectly as well.

It was a '51' Renault Megane that the dealers flyer describer as a 1.4 manual. However it was a 1.6 Automatic. It was priced the same as all the other 1.4's on the forecourt and I'm sure a larger cc engine with Auto would have been worth more (it was 3 years old at the time).

I didn't care as the V5 was correct, the tax disc was correct, just the dealers description on the A4 flyer was incorrect.

I reckon the engine fitted to your escort was probably the low compression van 1.1 engine, now they were so slow they were deadly

There was actually a 950cc version of the Mk2 Escort available in some markets. I've seen them in France, bearing the "0.9" on the front wings with pride.

My 1.3L was slow, my parents' 1.1 Popular Plus was flat out at 60mph (above which the temperature gauge needle went up in parallel to the speedo) and had acceleration on a par with a glacier. God knows what a 0.9 litre was like.

One of my early cars was a Mk1 Escort with the 1100cc engine. A previous owner had made a fitted carpet out of some swirly, more or less purple '70s lounge offcut. The car was otherwise beige and had Colway remoulds on it which used to shed tread blocks occasionally.

Not the best car I've ever owned.....

My brother in law bought a nearly new Volvo V70 from a well known respected dealer. It was badged up and its V5 stated as having the 5 cylinder engine but had a lower order 4 cylinder engine in it. The dealer was reluctant to give him his money back as well.

No one thought of opening the front lid and counting the plugs then PU? If I'd been the dealer I'd have been reluctant too. Didn't he drive the thing? Didn't he listen to it?

Honestly...

You do wonder, AC - but then modern engine bays aren't that easy to see into. You wouldn't know from the underbonnet view of my Volvo that it has five cylinders - all you can see is a big plastic cover marked 'Volvo Common Rail Diesel'. No plugs, of course, but there aren't five of anything to make it obvious without removing the cover, which I've never done.

Must have been an old or a very new V70. From, I think, 1999 to 2008, they all had five cylinders. But these days I can see a lot of potential for passing off a less-tuned derivative for a higher-output version of the same engine, like Volvo's current D5 and 2.4D options. Not sure how I'd tell on a seller's forecourt which one I was looking at.

The covers are different colours. Not sure how they are distinguishing the newer D3, D4 & D5 though. Hope it's not a VIN check.

My lad got turned over when he bought his Scooby, he had a few jobs done by the nearby specialist and even they didn't notice, but eventually the engine blew and it turned out not to have an Imprezza engine at all but indeed a Legacy engine.

Legacy has totally different mapping and fuelling and is built accordingly, his RA Imprezza should have had all sorts of strengthened parts ie turbo, pistons and special heads and runs higher power at much higher revs.

It cost a lot to put the job right.

An aunt of mine of min was sold what she though was a Mk 3 Escort 1.3L. It was only at the first service she found out that it was a 1.1. She managed to get a refund of overpaid insurance, but the guy that sold her the car was long gone.

Apparently the giveaway was badging. In those days Fords with the smallest engine in any particular variant did not have an engine badge on the boot.

Not sold but replaced wrong engine. Friend of mine had a BMW 328i that was recalled because of the Nikasil piston linings or whatever the well publicised problem was. The dealer installed a new engine which my friend was delighted with as it ran much better. He got a phone call a few months later saying they had mistakenly fitted a 325 engine and could they please swap it out for a new 328 which they duly did. The original engine had done 90,000 miles but no mention of it not qualifying for a 100% free rebuild/replace. I was running a Passat at the time and arguing with the VW dealer over several service and warranty issues; it made me think.

Years ago I put a deposit down on a nearly-new Sharan at a VW dealership on the basis that it was the 'higher powered' 110 bhp engine. The dealer assured me it was and nothing on the car indicated otherwise.

I had my doubts (it was a similar price to other 90 bhp ones available) and queried it with VW HQ quoting the reg. no. They confirmed it was the lower powered engine.

It took an awful long time to get the dealer to refund my deposit!
