You dont fall asleep and then stay asleep while and after crashing over a central reservation. The"trance like state" indicates something else was at work here. Epilepsy, narcolepsy maybe.

Did he stay asleep? I'm not sure, it seems that once over the central reservation he conciously drove against the oncoming traffic, up.the slip road etc.
