Interesting twaddle.
Best engineer I have ever worked with was self taught.We used to work on Gardner ship engines and he had the knack of making it look very simple.Which it wasn't.

Once heard ,you can never fail to recognise the sound of a Gardner engine.
They were the bees knees when I left the plant and machinery trade many years ago!
....a bit like Castrol R, once smelled (smelt?) never forgotten;)

The Bristol double decker buses from my childhood always had that distinctive noise. That rhythmic, lolloping idle, and a smooth, lazy sounding growl under load. Lovely things.
One came up the road at the Alton bus rally a few years ago, and I knew what it was before it came around the corner. Great noise, and as you say, very memorable.

Couple that Gardner engine to a Voith gearbox (ala MCW Metrobus) and you have some truly memorable sounds.
