The G31 ("7th generation BMW 5 series Touring 2017 model" for Bobby) was offloaded from MV Baltic Breeze at Southampton Docks berth 40 on Sunday. Its being registered today, so arrival with me is imminent.
Now insurance quote, compare the market.
Guess the minimum and the maximum. I warn you, its a wide spread.
|
Minimum: £396
Maximum: £2942
(based on the V90 last week!)
Pat
|
Minimum: £2,134
Maximum: £6,487
(based on the bus!)
;-)
|
for insurance purposes, the bus incident and the subsequent conviction is a spent event. Try again
|
...being serious, I would suspect the lowest could be around the £200-220 mark; the highest isn't worth aiming for, as it's likely to be an entirely spurious quote from someone who doesn't want the business.
|
Depends on add-ons such as legal cover etc etc though lets say £250 to £2250.
|
I've missed something. You've a brand spanking new BMW on the way?!
|
I do, a BMW 540i x-drive SE Touring
|
My son's newish M3 is £400 +/- & he is 40.
So £350 to £4500 (£4500 is company that do not insure cars over 2 litre)
|
>>a BMW 540i x-drive SE Touring
Aren't they called G31s amongst the cognoscenti? You ought to get down with the lingo.

Yes, a well known expert in dodgy colours stated that it was "Old man's slacks green".

Gullible more like ;)

I bet it's not too bad because you're quite old aren't you? £240-£680.
|
Ok, the spread from the meerkat is £339 to £3999.
The lowest is LVE with whom i am with anyway.
Phoned up LVE to discuss a change over, and for 12 months they want
£274
The volvo renewal is £253
The extra 160 horsepower is merely 19 quid extra. Well impressed!
|
Remember, don't pay for breakdown via your insurance as that is included in the BMW warranty.
I pay £280 on the M135 for my wife and myself, including business use for both of us plus legal cover, windscreen, courtesy car etc.

I pay £410 for the M140i for similar cover, although I opted out of legal cover as I have it through my employer as part of my package. I have a non-fault accident on my record from last year though.
The biggest issue I found when trying to insure the car was a compulsory £500 "vehicle type excess" that all insurers apply to the M140i over and above any voluntary excess. Is it the same with the M135i?
|
I reckon I am a little older than you, no accidents in 15 years (touch wood) and a clean licence (touch wood), plus the area can make a difference.
My Aviva policy has a £250 "vehicle type" excess though if you choose to have no voluntary excess the total is only £250.
Is yours £500 "vehicle type" and £0 voluntary or £250 "vehicle type" and £250 voluntary? The latter would be the default AFAIK?

That's interesting as I am also with Aviva.
The £500 "Vehicle Type" excess was compulsory, and completely independent of (and in addition to) any other excess. Every insurer who quoted stuck this on. I transferred last year's cover with Privilege on to this car when I got it, and they set it at £750!
I live in a low risk postcode, and have a clean license (touch wood also). The non fault accident adds about £30 based on my comparison site experiments. 15,000 miles a year with business cover. I'm 42.

>> Desirable cars for the discerning criminal sadly.
It has occurred to me, although I'd be a lot more worried if I had an Audi S or RS model.
|
Just rechecked, my policy says "vehicle type excess £250".
Business cover for wife and I.
I'm 55 (nearly 56 ...).
|
I had 500 quid voluntary excess on the long boat, it was carried over onto the BMW. every meerkat quote added 500 quid xcess onto the price in addition to any voluntary.
|
Scurries away to check his policy.
|
£250.00 vehicle type excess.
|
No voluntary excess on mine. IIRC, the compulsory excess is £150.

Mines a convertible, so you’d think would attract a higher excess. But I’m insured with LV and the compulsory excess is only £200. That’s parked off road, but not garaged, for 15k miles a year and including business use. Additional voluntary excesses made so little difference to the premium that I didn’t bother. I had a glass claim last year (side window) but it didn’t seem to have any impact on this years premium. Let’s see what this years glass claim (windscreen) does!!
|

Ah yes, forgot that! It’s £397. That’s with one SP30 for me (!!) and a medically restricted licence for my partner (renewed every three years...). Though I imagine they’re not allowed to take that into account...? Last accident (non fault) was in 2011, and I’m guessing I’m slightly younger than you...? I’m one of the last pre-decimals!!
Edited to add...actually, maybe I’m not younger than you! Sorry :)

At a more mundane level changing from 68PS 05 1.9D Mk2 Berlingo to 2013 Mk3 115XTR which was also a much bigger car involved no change in premium.
|
As has been discussed many times over the years it's hard to second guess insurance prices between different cars. However Zero's prices for the new motor are about what I'd expect if it were my car.
We were pleasantly surprised that Mrs F's move from Cactus to CLK only amounted to under £10/yr extra. That's with LV who have been very good on premiums over the past few years, we get a little extra discount for Mrs F's employer too.
The only issue I have is their daft uplift to put my daughter on the 5-series insurance. They refused to quote when she was 18, wanted some daft sum like 3x the annual premium on top when she was 19 but I haven't got round to asking now she's 20.
Re claims they (LV) did seem to be a little too quick to push for a knock for knock when my learner daughter was run into on a roundabout while under Mrs F's supervision. The arrogant male driver put a lot of effort into trying to swamp "just" a girl and her mum in a small car (C3) with loose facts and twisted logic.... we got him to back down in the end but really only because of my efforts not those of LV.

I shop around every year.
The best (cheapest) quotes were from Direct Line.

Picked it up yesterday.. The BMW 540i x-drive Touring in Atlas Cedar is now sitting on my drive.

At least yesterday was a nice day... ;). Usually I’d say a damp autumn day, fallen leaves and 340bhp could lead to some entertaining action, but image the x-drive will temper that!
Enjoy the new car :)

Enjoy Zeddo. Now into our second week at Moraira, enjoying unseasonably warm weather which means roof down for the myriad of convertibles out here.
My extra insurance from £2200 Focus to Barbies dream car, until renewal next June, was £50 from memory. Excess stayed the same. I queried this amount 3 times. Being old & living in rural N Yorks helps.

So you bought your Volvo from your son, I can understand a twenty something lad wanting rid, and thinking that it might suit his old dad, though why does he want it back?
And does the 5er meet expectations so far?

Nice colour - finally figured out the hard disk thing on mine
|
still struggling with mine. Put a loaded USB drive in, don't know how to load it to the hard drive. Might even have to look in the manual. Or talk to the Tech Guy at Cooper BMW. I had to have lessons and pass a test in tech stuff before they let me have the car.
|
When a CD is playing the vertical menu on the screen has a double square icon (folder symbol I suspect) click on that and it downloads onto the Hard Disk. The HD has 12 gig according to what I;ve read elsewhere. Both versions of the Manuals are silent on it.

Yeah cracked it, bung in USB, select it from the audio menu, while its playing left push I drive wheel, scroll down, select "transfer music" and bingo.
Also hadn't realised to bring up menus about the tiles on screen, tap the red title bar.
Not sure about size of hard drive, just dumped 11.8 gb on it, fast too.
And yeah, got no manual for it, its available on my BMW tho if you set it up with your vin

I have around 32GB of varied music on an SD card in my car... so not tried to transfer to the infotainment system's flash drive (we know it's not a hard drive) because it wouldn't fit.
So far only tried to play one 720P movie out of curiosity on the infotainment system.... not tried a DVD in it and probably never will.
|
Superb interface. Slightly more intuitive on my 320d, but incredibly clever.
|
>> got no manual for it, its available on my BMW tho if you set it up with your vin<<
Well worth doing Z if it's half as good as My Volvo.
We did it for the XC60 and then changed vehicles for the V90 and were amazed at the information available as well as updates etc.

It's also on the iDrive, complete with illustrations and everything. I find myself reading it when I'm sitting waiting for the kids to come out of whatever social engagement I am ferrying them from. Passes the time :-)

Can I get my bid in for first refusal, if you decide to trade up within a couple of years or so?
No scratches or dents in the meantime, though.
Nice motor, Z. I hope you enjoy the experience.

Pah. My barbiemobile is showing 25mpg.
Watch out for camera vans on quiet sections of Scottish motorway
Sounds a lovely motor

Reckon you'll get more than that, mine can get down to 26/27 pottering locally and less if hooning though an average average (IYKWIM) is around 30 and much more if including a long run, 37mpg + is quite easy even if cruising at 80 ish.
What's the CO2 G/KM?
|
>> What's the CO2 G/KM?
I reckon 24 mpg doesn't sound too far off. My car has the same B58 engine, but is lighter and 2WD, and is averaging 28.2 mpg over 8,500 miles against a computer reading (never reset) of 28.8. For a 335 bhp car that is "well exercised", I'm pretty happy with that.
My best trip average is 43.2 mpg. Home to our Bristol office, door to door, in quiet traffic, cruising at 70-75 all the way. Worst trip average is 13.6 mpg on a 7 mile run home from the station in really hideous traffic, but "making up time" in the quieter bits. These are computer figures, but I have verified the accuracy of this against brim to brim calculations, and it's pretty close.

A passenger in the 335 mentioned the fact that at around 80mph it's only running around 1.5k to 2.0k revs. So I guess fuel consump will be accordingly good

The major advantage of the B58 engine, it's that is very diesel like with its torque delivery, shed loads of it, all of it there from about 1700 revs to red line..
Had two longish motorway runs, out to Laverstoke mill (Bombay sapphire tour) in non rush our, in to Basingstoke and out home again in rush hour Hurley burley, and home to Tring this morning in variable M25 traffic, it's crept up to 25.1

Mine has the N55 engine though otherwise has much more in common with yours than Z's and I have just checked the long term computer (also never reset as far as I can recall) 29.0 MPG over 18,050 miles. Amazingly close, less than 1% ...
The local pottering has a bigger impact on the average that I though perhaps as on a run it is usually on the high side of 35mpg, even enthusiastic cross country blasts over the Mendips and Salisbury Plain to the A303, M3 and suburbia.

Mind you mixing combos you didnt have the chance to test has some down sides. Sun protection glass, dimming rear mirror and cage means the rear view out the back at night does not exist.

Gosh. Quite surprising.
