How much for an old Carina? - Stuu
Anyone wanna have a stab at the final value on it? Its already surpassed my expectations so its well into the unknown ( its at £410 right now ).
I cant believe anyone would pay that much for such old rope really, even I didnt and I pay good money sometimes. Car prices are weird right now.

The most ive seen and old Carina go for so far is £500 for a 2.0 with 100k and a short MOT, I found that rather perplexing in itself.

Or for banger racing

£560. Nice ad, honest sounding and looks in good nick. I see you've had the usual offers to end it early - cheeky whotsits.
How much for an old Carina? - Stuu
£560 would be most welcome. I tried to be honest and invite people to look it over as ive not got the knowledge to say it isnt about to break down, just that I trust it myself - it could be 5 miles from total failure for all I know, old cars are like that.
I put the end early question on there to make a point and it that was the last time anyone asked, so it worked :-)

Are you putting your "understanding wife" up for auction next?
They are worth their weight in gold and I, for one, would bid good money to obtain one.
Car's not bad, either.

Sometimes I wish I was in the UK. I've been trying to find a cheapie runabout for my friends to keep at their cottage over here and I have yet to see anything advertised for 500 or 600 euros that has either a CT (MOT) or a working engine. The French are terminally optimistic when they want to sell, which is why their gardens are full of old cars.
The UK seems like old car heaven to a bangernomics fan like me.

You'd have liked it even more up to about a year ago Mike, banger prices were only 2/3rds as high as they are today. Then the scrappage scheme skimmed off all the tidy ones and bumped up the price of the old dross... very few decent cars slipped through the net.

Having said that, I reckon Stu's Carina is one of the very few decent ones ;-)

I can't help noticing that all bar one of the Carina IIs on ebay are automatics, thinking of their original target market this may go some way towards explaining why they seem to survive to such a ripe old age.

A young mechanic at a garage near to me has a P-registered Carina which he's souped up a little. It's very tidy and he says it's never given any problems.

Surprising to hear such a young lad be so enthusiastic about a car most of us would probably avoid if the truth was told as they are, to say the least, somewhat bland.

Mind you, such young employees get a great opportunity to weigh up customers' older cars whilst servicing them and mark one or more out for a possible buy if they ever become available.

I've been looking for an old Celica for reasonable money (should have nabbed this one, really: cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200507336498 ) but what I have noticed is that most of the really well-kept ones are automatics. I don't feel old enough for an auto, yet, but it does seem to separate the boy racers from the gentlemen owners...

Amazing that no one bid on it ... nice car, luvly engine.

He sold it elsewhere, I think. I was kicking myself for not putting a holding bid in a bit sooner!

I think the badge snobbery helps, too. Hence Stu's new Daewoo...
How much for an old Carina? - Stuu
Badge snobbery is a killer if your buying cheap cars because you still pay more, even at this level usually.
Try and find a fully historied Mondeo with 45k on the clock and no doubt in the current market, that would be an easy £700.
When I was looking about at cars, the only brands worth looking at really are the obscure ones like Proton, Suzuki ( Baleno is very cheap still ), Daewoo and older Kia/Hyundai sometimes although even they are being inflated right now.
I had £400 set aside if I found something, that was fixed pretty much and this Daewoo was by far and away the best car at that price I could find. The key is buying a reasonable car whose model people have either never heard of ( and so wont look twice at it in a listing ) or they simply wont buy because it isnt mainstream. I dont suffer either of those buying prejudices - some plonker is going to pay more for my Carina than I spent on the Espero. It makes no sense at all really.

>> Try and find a fully historied Mondeo with 45k on the clock and no doubt in the current market, that would be an easy £700

There was an aerosol-sprayed, unhistoried, P reg MkI Mondeo 4-door near me last month with 150k on the clock and £599 in the windscreen. It sold in two days. Same bloke now has a P reg Proton saloon, paint on bootlid de-lacquering, badly fitting front bumper, missing wheeltrims, 86k on the clock but looking at the steering wheel and seat it could well have done 4x that mileage - £495. I don't expect it will be there much past the weekend.

Almost makes you wonder why we expend so much effort cleaning/prepping cars when we sell them.
How much for an old Carina? - J Bonington Jagworth
Mileage is the other thing - people still often shy away from anything over 100k, but most cars can do double that if looked after. The irony is that the older low-mileage examples have more likely achieved it with lots of short journeys. About three years ago, my daughter-in-law was taken with an Escort with 24k on it. It was clean enough, but I told her to run and hide!

Here in the South (of France) the prices are just as high. The equivalent of the UK subsidised trade in scheme took some good stuff off the roads. What is left is grossly over priced, but it does have the advantage of very little rot as a result of dry climate and very little salt. The mileages tend to be all very high. The scrap yards have generally got good bodied wrecks, but have yet to explore the yard prices.

I hope your new buyer doesn't come here! :-)
How much for an old Carina? - Bellboy
older cars normally go to low income people so they want small engines for cheaper road tax
small engines for cheaper insurance
small engines for economy
this is why big lumps dont sell so easily
How much for an old Carina? - Mapmaker
Well, it made just over the cost of the cambelt etc. service + the value of the remaining tax.

Reckon it was a bargain for somebody.
How much for an old Carina? - Zero
So now its sold, what was wrong with it, or what about it did you not like?
How much for an old Carina? - Stuu
Nothing really wrong with it, nothing other than small niggles like a sticky elec window, it runs ok, drives ok, bit lumpy when cold but most cars with autochokes ive had are when they get old and I think maybe the choke doesnt work so well anymore.

I just kept my eye out for something newer and lower mileage and the Daewoo came along.
With it being a manual, it may be a little more economical and as its had cambelt done recently, it was more or less a swap with the Toyota in terms of cost to change - actually the Daewoo cost to change was £472 including the small service/thermostat, so Im up £60 and get a newer car with less miles.
I wasnt focussed on changing the Toyota, just had one eye open if something worth changing it for came along.

.. not including the cost of the super valet.

Stu should include a claim for his trading losses in his next return to the taxman, but then he might get charged business rates for using his patio as car wash and valet facility. :-)

How much for an old Carina? - J Bonington Jagworth
My sort of banger is a larger car (or one with a larger engine) that is unfashionable and therefore cheap. Stu's Daewoo is a perfect example, but even quite upmarket cars can fit the bill, as real execs don't want to be seen in a car more than 3 (let alone 13) years old and ordinary punters are scared of the running costs.

I recall Quentin Willson demonstrating that a 7-series BM was relatively cheap to maintain, as the consumables were no more expensive than for anything else, and because it was well made and lightly stressed, it was likely to wear well, which is not the case with most small cars. The extra tax (pre-2001 models) and fuel consumption are not really such major issues, especially if you're no longer suffering much depreciation.
How much for an old Carina? - Stuu
I quite like the ribbing about having a deeply unfashionable car. The bigger joke is on the people who pay more for a car that performs the same task but with a different badge on the bonnet.
Its unlikely ill ever drive anything with prestige and Im proud of that.

Ive heard from the buyer and making arrangements for this coming week, they sound genuine, its all good. Ill be glad to have my patio back though, I wanna park the Daewoo there to clean it, if I do it out front of house, neighbours might try and chat.

> Its unlikely ill ever drive anything with prestige

You're doing yourself out of some pleasure :-(
How much for an old Carina? - J Bonington Jagworth
I like being unfashionable. For one thing, most people have trouble recognising their own cars in car park, let along another brand, so having something slightly different sometimes excites some interest, and for those who really don't care about cars, then it wouldn't matter if you drove a Maybach...
