New estate in Bracknell: clamping spree - smokie
On the local lunchtime news there was an item that the joint developers of the Jennets Park estate alongside the A 329 have engaged a clamping company to enforce no stopping around the estate. The "excuse" is that until the estate is adopted by the Borough council, the house builders (Redrow Homes (Southern) Ltd and Persimmon Homes Ltd) are responsible for H&S and this is their way of enforcing it. A lady on the programme said she wouldn't have moved there if she'd known about it. And there seem to be plenty of examples of over-enthusiastic clamping, if the reports you read in Google are to be believed, costing £170+ to get released.

Although I am near the estate I haven't been round it so really can't say whether they have a point, but it does seem a bit much to blame poor old H&S, who gets blamed for so much these days... And a bit tough on the residents and their visitors.

Surely if the houses had planning permission one of the rules is there is sufficient off street parking and room for your wheely bins?
So it seems to me its possible the lazy people who live on the estate cant be bothered maneuvering into their allocated desiray spots?

so nail em............

This is quite common on Industrial Estates now.

Swan Valley at Nothampton, most of them around Thurrock and Magna Park at Lutterworth, are three that spring to mind.
They will charge £240+ to have the clamp removed and it has been known for a vehicle to be clamped when the driver has parked on the road, just to go to a gatehouse and ask for directions to the firm he's looking for.

It applies to cars as well as lorries and there is no justification for it whatsoever.

...They will charge £240+ to have the clamp removed...

Must be worth hiring a generator and an angle-grinder.

OK, it's criminal damage, but I just could not bring myself to pay £240 to a private clamping company.

yup, the hire of a petrol angle grinder will get the clamp off without the fee of 240 quid.

They can see me in court. When someone affixes it to your car, I dont aee it is criminal damage, as they had to touch my proprty to put it on. Its now mine to do with as I want.

The law on unsolicited gifts requires you to give the kind donor a period to remove it.

the bits would be availble for collection. Why I would even deliver it, free of charge.

I saw a Sierra driver beat a 'council' clamp in London.

He let the tyre down and managed to get an open-ended spanner onto the wheel nuts to get the wheel off.

It was then a fairly simple matter to wiggle the wheel and tyre free of the still locked clamp.

The guy fitted the spare and drove off, leaving the clamp beside the road.

I've stopped for a tacho break here before: bit.ly/c5xyJZ and been woken after 20 minutes by a parking enforcement officer ordering me to move off the estate or be clamped. (Note the lack of any yellow lines, and as I turned left into Shackelton Way from the A4303 there were no parking enforcement signs on view either.)

I told him where to go, as I wasn't going to interrupt my break when parked legally and safely. He said I was causing an obstruction, although I would have estimated traffic on that road to have been approx. one vehicle every 2 minutes. He did clear off, but I spent the rest of my break feeling quite rattled and having to stay alert for anyone wielding an oversized wheelclamp. Which dovetails rather well with another current thread about lorry drivers, breaks and alertness...

>> Swan Valley at Nothampton,

Saw the signs for this while doing daughter's driving practice. Suppose that, except for the Cross Valley road, the rest of it is private.

Motorway service areas are another problem.
If a lorry parks in an empty coach park they clamp it within minutes as they sit in an unmarked van and watch for the driver to leave the cab.
I got woken up by a knock on the cab door at 1.45am one morning at Farthing Corner services ( Believe it's called Medway now but old habits die hard!) and I refused to open the door or the window more than an inch.
There was 2 burly blokes standing there with orange high viz jackets on and I was terrified.
Eventually they convinced me to look through my front ( drawn) curtains and see the sign they'd stuck on the windscreen saying I'd been clamped.

The parking ticket (£20 then ) had got disloged from their view when I'd pulled my curtains at 9pm the night before.
They did unclamp me but it took 2 hours to photostat copies of the parking ticket and get the ok from their boss.
Tired lorry drivers?

Edit that's a quarter of an old Penny that the swear filter objects to! now corrected
