Seems a little short sighted to me, a bandwagon to jump on and nothing more:

Maybe ten o'clock though twenty to nine, hmm ;-)

EDIT: It's the embedded carbon that is the issue, if all vehicles on the road will have 300 mile plus range battery packs ...

(Ill be 85 by then - so probably)

The French of course will have a slight EU issue of freedom of access by other EU members non leccy cars.

I have told them to form an orderly queue. Several members have had to be reprimanded for trying to push in.

Funnily enough, my son ( 17 ) and I were chatting the other day about how his driving life is likely to be very different to mine. He may not even have to, or be allowed to drive in the second half of his adult life as maybe there will only be self driving cars. But even the experience of hammering across Europe in a fast car in the dead of night is already not really an option in this era of cameras.

I think our generation probably had more fun with cars than the next will. ( While of course bumping a few of us off along the way )

On the one hand it's 23 years until 2040, who knows what might be possible by then.

On the other we cannot rely on politicians delivering a policy they promised 23 days ago (eg Grenfell rehousing). What chance the can won't be kicked down the road and into long grass sooner rather than later.

Over 40% of new car sales in Norway are full electric now.

Of course they have favourable tax deals and a surplus of hydro-electric generation...

(I've used the CNG/LNG-fuelled ones to cross from the Vesteralen, but this is a bigger step forward).
