Volvo S40 - Cambelt time... - Auntie Lockbrakes
Whilst visiting my elderly Mother recently I suddenly realised that her 2006 Volvo S40 D5 hadn't had its 10-year cambelt change done. I can't imagine that the car is worth much now (although it's in good nick with around 90,000 miles on the clock)? Started to think that the cambelt change might cost more than the car is worth?!

Anyhow, her local trusty independent garage has done it today for 460 quid all-in, which I think is pretty reasonable? He said he'd do it in a day but as it turned out he needed a further couple of hours labour to finish the job this morning. He didn't increase his invoice though.

Not quite bangernomics, but makes good sense to me to pay up willingly and try and get another few years out of the car, which she and my late Father bought ex-demonstrator in 2006? She doesn't do many miles these days, so it being diesel is a bit of a concern, but the EGR valve was replaced 3 years ago, and so I am hoping that a blast down the by-pass once a month will keep it sweet...

Totally agree. My father in law, who is 81, does fewer than 1000 miles a year now in his 11 year old Fiesta which he's had from new. In fact the car has only just gone over 30,000 miles in total. He really doesn't need a car now but he still keeps muttering about buying a new one.

Of course, if that's what he wants to do to treat himself, at his age, then why not, but really, he's better just keeping on with the one he has as its in near perfect condition.

Just had the cam belt changed on my XC70 D4 for 408 quid. Cam belt kit, Aux drive belt (if that goes it takes the cam belt out with it) and water pump (ditto reasons) Takes a while to settle the airlocks out of the heating system, but they did it in a day.

Volvo wanted 850 quid.

Volvos still have cambelts do they?

Gosh.

The VWs that went to chains have moved back to belts.

Plenty of issues with MBs and chains, although generally on petrol models with simplex chains. The diesels use duplex chains.

People I know with Volvos speak quite well of Carpenters Autos at Hampton Court.

Means a trip North of the river, though....

It's what it is worth to you that matters, not what someone would pay for it. A reliable old nail is worth the odd biggish bill if you are confidant you can get a few more years out of it. Replace a car because of age alone and you might regret it if the next one turns out to be troublesome.

So true. Mrs madf's Yaris is now 14 years old and although in fine overall shape has needed worn out things replacing: heater resistor, rear coil spring and now window regulator in the past two years..( the only non maintenance and consumables items (apart from ARB bushes).. in our 12 years of ownership. Part cost under £100.. and all DIY'd..

It's worth peanuts but a reliable replacement would be £1000sss. So it will soldier on...and on..

I've just bought a timing belt for my 240 as it's coming due shortly.
£10.39, fairly straightforward DIY job.

That's incredibly cheap for any type of belt, I think the last belt was just an aux belt and it was double that.

Likewise my experience once. I had a cam belt done (by a garage) on an old Audi 80 i had. While you wait job, £120.

Contrast that to the one done on my Corolla earlier this year £300 (no water pump replaced)

I always remember once (always sticks in my mind), neighbour AA man coming over for a chat while I was tinkering once under the bonnet and he commented about the water pump being a piece of p*** to change with it being run off a dedicated belt (and being separate from the timing run).

Although modern cars are much more reliable and nicer to drive, one sometimes hankers after the days when water pumps, thermostats, starter motors ans alternators could be changed while still on the same cup of tea.

That's cheap some cars are north of a grand, i remember the v6 cilo was a bit of a monster of a job. The rover v6 cambelt change was about a grand iirc.

Word on the Yaris forum is to replace them Ford Focus bushes. Cheaper and last longer.

Sorry, didn't recognise you from the different moniker.

Thanks for the tip.
