Speed limits will remain in place until later this month

So they want to cut air pollution.......great idea, don't have poxy speed limits on motorways during the rush hour, but have " stupid driver cameras in operation" ....those driving at 50 in the inside lane, so lorries have to overtake them....... make it a minimum speed limit of 55mph, it's a motorway to,get, from one place to another as quickly as possible.
Those in lanes 2,3,4 Unless you are overtaking , Move left.
I went down the M3 today , I overtook a person in lane 2 pooling in lane 2, with 20/30 cars behind them, and I moved into the left hand lane, and drove off....still they didn't take the hint.....massive fine.
If they really want to do air control, take the A4 for an example, If from Slough you take the A 4 to Gillette corner there are probably 20 sets of traffic lights......I guarantee If you pull away from no 1 set and keep to 40mph you will get to EVERY SET OF LIGHTS, ON A RED. .....You'd have to drive at 60 or 20 to get thru them without stopping......it's all about revenue raising

Stop moaning, if you use the road you are part of the problem which prompted the changes. If you don't like them use public transport. I used the M3 recently, I did not find it any different to most other motorways.

I often undertake and (hopefully) haven't been caught yet. You see more and more folk doing it.
Is it actually illegal? I can't find anything in the highway code that says it is.

Extract from HC rule 163.
Only overtake on the left if the vehicle in front is signalling to turn right, and there is room to do so.
Also
Rule 268
Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.

Overtaking on the near side is not illegal per se. The Highway Code rule does not have the force of law. Such overtaking could in certain circumstances constitute.the offence of Dangerous Driving.
It all depends on the circumstances.

That is only advice. If it was illegal it would say you MUST not.
You could not be done for overtaking on the left on it's own, but if you endangered someone with the manouvre or caused an accident that would put a few extra nails in your coffin.

If you are arrogant and important enough to undertake you would probably fail the attitude test. :-)

If you are arrogant and stupid enough to drive at 60 mph in the middle lane you get undertaken.

You can get a fine if you are really unlucky and the police see you. I wonder how long it will be until it is camera enforced.

For the last two years, the M74 around where I live has had major roadworks and has had SPECS cameras for a 50 limit.
This stretched to about 3 miles outside Glasgow and I could happily sit at 55mph all the way into Glasgow (and in process get high 80's indicated mpg for my commute)
Since roadworks have finished we have 4 lanes of 70mph limits instead which means that most folk race along as fast as the car in front will allow, and consequently when you get to a mile outside Glasgow, the traffic is stationery as everyone has got there too quickly!
Another by product of the new road layout is that the motorway has 4 lanes, with the inside two going to the M73 and the outside two staying as M74. And this stretch lasts for probably 1-2 miles. So if you are a trucker speed limited, do you stay in the inside lane and then move out to lane 3 at the appropriate time or do you just sit in lane 3 and accept all the M73 traffic will overtake on the inside lane (the lanes aren't marked as slip roads at this point so all lining is identical).

It might be open, but it's not permanently open, just yet anyway. On several evenings last week after declaring it open, they were booting everything London-bound off at J4a after 9pm, up the A327 (single carriageway) to Minley, down the A30 to Camberley, round the Meadows roundabout, and down the A331 to J4. Based on the traffic chaos on the little stretch of the A30 I had to use on Wednesday evening, it would not be exaggerating to say that detour would have taken the poor individuals who had to do it, an hour or more.
The distance between J4a and J4 is less than 2 miles

Was down it since "opening" for the first time on Sunday. Still has SPECS with live cameras during commissioning. Two things come to mind, there a few if any refuge areas from the new hard shoulder/running lane, and there appears to be a shed load of new HADECS cameras, and who is to know if they are set up in average, or spot mode or 77mph+ triggered.

Oh, the absolute horror of having to obey the speed limit.
|
To be honest, having been subjected to that stretch in rush hour for 5 years, averaging 20 mph would be an achievement on most days.
|
The cameras are not there for rush hour, it will be during the other 20 ish hours that they make a mint. :-)

I have been up to Zero's manor perhaps 15 times in the last two years and on at least 6 occasions I have gone to join the M3 at either the M25 or Lightwater only to find it closed, sometimes as far as Camberley and sometimes Fleet. IIRC I had to take the A30 as far as Basingstoke once.
