Ford Focus III - Dozy insurance question - legacylad
I've extended my stay on the NY Moors and plan to drive directly to the Lakes tomorrow. My car was retaxed last month, MOT done a few weeks ago, but my insurance expires at either midnight on Sunday 4/06 or Monday 5/06.
I don't have time to renew as I'm busy socialising, walking, drinking etc with friendsbut so long as I'm home by midnight 4/06 and the car is off the public highway, and not going to be on it for several days, I don't need to renew my insurance.
After a long hot 18 miler today, and several beers in the Lion on Blakey Ridge ( I wasn't driving) my brain cells are even worse than normal!

Many now auto-renew. Check if yours is from a company like this one: "Motor insurance is a legal requirement and auto renewal protects our customers. It ensures there is no inadvertent break in cover".

The company I quoted above also says: "following the legislative changes brought in by the DVLA. Under the Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) rules, it is a legal requirement for motorists to insure their vehicle at all times unless it is declared as ‘off road’ with a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) with the DVLA. If there is no record on the Motor Insurance Database (MID) showing a vehicle is insured, and a customer has not declared it SORN, they will receive a warning letter that they could face a fine, or prosecution. In some circumstances the vehicle could be clamped, seized and ultimately, destroyed."

I've never known anyone actually have a problem with a few days no insurance when it's off road, for sure i did it for a week or so last year for much the same reason, didn't even get the warning letter. You can't declare SORN for just a few days anyway, unless they've changed the rules. It'd be tricky seizng a car that's not on the public highway for starters.

If you don't declare the car as SORN to DVLA continuous insurance is a legal requirement.

As per others unless car is SORN and off public highway being without insurance is an offence.

Most policies (IME) auto renew but if not you might as well spend time sorting renewal as fannying about with SORN etc.....

Thanks for replies.
Might divert home en route to Lakes and spend an hour grabbing clean clothes & renewing car insurance then
My new car arrives Sept so will pay monthly and try to find an insurer who doesn't charge £££ to terminate or change the policy. Every which way I'm probably stuffed.
I thought SORN was only if you had no tax or mot

Probably better safe than sorry!

If it were me, I would have left the uninsured car on the drive.

Then the handbrake would magically fail one minute after the MOT expired and it would roll in to the road and T-bone the most expensive car in the close that happened to be driving past at the time!

I'm lucky like that!

Even to ring your insurance company and say "please renew"?

It doesn't take more than 10 mins to do a Confused.com comparison, and only another 10 mins to sign up to an insurer if offered a better deal than currently.

Worth checking but I very much doubt it, when I took my car off the road for 9 months a while back, the 'time out' for NCD was 2 years.

My insurance expired @ midnight last Sunday, and I arrived home from the Lakes at 23:30. I rang my insurer whilst away, explained the situation, and they told me that if it was to be uninsured for a few days I needn't SORN it. So I didn't. It's in the garage not being used.

My renewal, with a broker of IAM Surety, had increased by almost 40%. I took out a new, considerably cheaper policy online with the Coop....and get £50 of food vouchers after 90 days. New car arrives late Sept/Oct, so there will be a £15 admin fee to pay should I remain with them and change the car details, plus a £50 fee if I cancel the policy mid term and go elsewhere.

Just need to forward my proof of NCD to my new insurer now
