Just been watching an episode of A Touch of Frost c1996. Unleaded was 55.9 pence per litre!

The cars were unanimously awful. A DAF van, a boxy mark 1 Astra and a miserable blue Sierra.

The '90s clearly weren't a heyday for cars.

According to an online inflation calculator, that works out at just over a quid a litre now.

Having just paid 113.9 I'm crying with you.

Not quite true, the original Mondeo was introduced in the mid-90s and was a pretty good car at the time.

IIRC I was paying around 5/11d a gallon (around 30p) in the early 70s.

I've not Googled this, but I seem to remember that Q20/50 could be had for about 80p (16 bob) per gallon. I had a very thirsty Anglia around 69/71.

I remember one of the mags driving a 1.6 90bhp LX to somewhere like Nice and back and saying it was brilliant, revolutionary.

Worth pointing out that a 1.6 Sierra struggled to top 30 mpg. I get more than that out of my Iveco Daily van.

I'd venture to suggest that in terms of fuel consumption alone, running costs are considerably cheaper these days; if you also factor in the longer service intervals and greater reliability of modern cars, even more so.

Yep, I used to work with a guy who was a photocopier salesman in a former life - told me the accounts guys used an assumed 18 mpg for the company fleet of Sierras for costing purposes

That's disgusting. I had an 1800 Princess in the late '70s that managed 40MPG (just) on a couple of tankfuls - 16 gallon IIRC, one hell of a range!
The 1700 Ambassador that replaced it struggled to do 30MPG.
