Worth pointing out that a 1.6 Sierra struggled to top 30 mpg. I get more than that out of my Iveco Daily van.
I'd venture to suggest that in terms of fuel consumption alone, running costs are considerably cheaper these days; if you also factor in the longer service intervals and greater reliability of modern cars, even more so.

Yep, I used to work with a guy who was a photocopier salesman in a former life - told me the accounts guys used an assumed 18 mpg for the company fleet of Sierras for costing purposes

That's disgusting. I had an 1800 Princess in the late '70s that managed 40MPG (just) on a couple of tankfuls - 16 gallon IIRC, one hell of a range!
The 1700 Ambassador that replaced it struggled to do 30MPG.
