 Ford diesels particulate filters - Bobby
Friend is thinking of getting a used Ford BMax diesel that a friend is selling.
On paper she doesn't do the mileage required for a diesel but it's a good deal, known car and good friend.
What do these cars do when or if the filter gets clogged? Is it limp home mode and dealer work or do they allow a blast along the motorway to clear??

If she doesn't do the mileage needed to make a diesel a good economic proposition it's a no brainer.

Our 7-year old Ford S-Max has done 65,000 on a diet of short trips. No DPF problems to report.

It's tough to get accurate info on these things but I think most diesels these days just do active regens when required. Our VW does them every few hundred miles. VW will tell you it passive regens but in practice the DPF doesn't get anything like hot enough in normal use.

I have done 45,000 miles in my Mondeo 2.0 Diesel and only do very short journeys on average.I have had no DPF problems whatsoever.It regens every 600 miles and when it's getting near that mileage i take it for a blast on the motorway or fast A road.This usually starts the regen and it takes about 5-10 minutes.Once done i reset the milometer and start again.

One point that a lot of people don't point out with diesels is that they produce no water out of the tail pipe.Consequently the exhaust system lasts ALOT longer on a diesel than a petrol when doing short journeys.

Also people say that a diesel costs more to service. I don't know where that comes from because it has less parts that need replacing at service time.No spark plugs to replace etc.

Anyway to sum up Ford diesels seem to resist short journey's better than most other brands.

Sparky plugs weren't changed on my Subaru Forester in the 4 years I haddit. Just as well really because thems is a right-royal PITA to get at.

4 years, is that all? On my old Vectra-C 2.2, the recommended change was 80,000 miles or 8 years, whichever the sooner.
They were eventually changed at 86,000 miles and showed no signs of wear at all.

Glowplugs on the other hand, had one recently changed on the Astra which cost £150. That included the diagnostic scan to find out why the SVS light was on. Price of the glow plug on its own (without fitting) was over £75. Glow plugs these days are very sophisticated (and expensive). They've got built in sensors and everything. Spark plugs on the other hand are still as cheap as chips.

I for one wouldn't fancy the job of having to remove sparky plugs which which had been in for 8 years - too many memories of the ole taper-fit jobbies from yesteryear shearing orf.

I've seen some REALLY badly-worn plugs too, so badly worn that either the centre electrode was burnt down level with the porcelain insulator, or the earth electrode had long left home.

Seen contact breakers so badly burnt away it was a wonder how the car started at all. Seen valve clearances which could be measured in 1/4" instead of thou. We don't know we're born these days :)

The plugs on the lancer were designed to be changed at 60k miles. They were, and they were perfect. The days of badly eroded or broken plugs are long gone, thanks to electronic ignition and knock sensors.

Indeed. Tis the knocking which knocked out the plugs I mentioned. I wonder what the upper cylinder area looked like on said cars.

The iridium plugs in my Jazz are due for an inspection at the 62,500 mile (100,000 Km) service.

Mine is the latest model with the L13B engine, four plugs on the top of the engine. I might have had to lean forward a few degrees. The car is on a Honda five year service plan, I will not be getting my hands dirty. :-)

Just checked the current service plan prices, they have shot up! Mine was £500 eight months ago, now £895 !

Mine is 2012.. the 5 year service package has ended so DIY..(Engine and gearbox oil easy..plugs? in 2022?)

The oily soot lining is a good rustproofer.

What engine is in it, and what age?

If it's a 1.6 and before 2011, run away. Fast.

For what it's worth, HJ said a few years back:

I haven't ever heard of a Hyundai diesel having DPF issues - but maybe I haven't looked hard enough.

Huge issues with the Hyundai 1.7 ix35 filters.
Even made Watchdog.

In the case of the Mazda 2.2 diesel the engine will self destruct before the dmf needs changing! Avoid this engine at all costs.

I have no doubt that modern spark plugs can last a long time. Whether they can be removed when the time does come is another matter. Every 14000 miles or two years I slacken mine off and re-tighten.

I do the same with brake bleed nipples.

DPF is hardly more expensive than an exhaust and lasts 100,000+ miles.
It is no big deal...
