I was under the impression that diesel car sales outnumber petrol car sales. However, looking at following news, looks like petrol has regained the lead.

Outside of EU:
In India petrol:diesel is currently roughly 50:50 but few years back it was 40:60 and in next couple of years predicted to be 60:40 in favour of petrol.
In USA, I believe petrol is significantly dominant over diesel.
In Japan also, the diesel cars are negligible (IIRC diesel cars were banned there until recently - this explains why Japanese makers were so late to adopt diesel especially Lexus).
