Car parking spaces are having to be made bigger to meet the growing size of family cars and 4x4s, the UK's largest car park provider has said.

National Car Parks (NCP) said it had widened some bays in London, Manchester and Bournemouth to cope with the popularity of increasingly large cars.

It of course will still make no difference to those people with no spacial awareness, or those who just "abandon" their car when they park.

Nor indeed the propensity of people to buy ludicrously oversized vehicles.

I wonder about the knock on when the bigger bays means fewer spaces.

Very likely. This will make parking congestion even worse.

I hope wider vehicles are charged more.

Our council have almost doubled the bay size on the two most popular floors (shop levels) of a local MSCP. The other half a dozen floors are never full.

Worked in Glasgow many years ago & parked in Waterloo St multi-storey with corkscrew access to floors. 1978-1993 & used it 2/3 times a week.

Last year a son needed to go for a company medical & I drove him. Confidently said I'd park the carpark & wait for him.

The corkscrew had got tighter than I recalled & the parking spaces were really narrow, even the aisles for access & exit had shrunk.

The problem was my CRV being probably 10" wider, fatter tyres, 2 wing mirrors, than Cavaliers, 405s of the 1980's & 90's.

The parking cost had risen somewhat - £1.50+ per hour rather than £1.50 a DAY!

Maybe I should have said "When I am there". We avoid areas cluttered up with people who have to work. :-)

But what if they aren't able to use the wider spaces because some muppet has parked their G-Wiz in a wide space instead of a narrow one?

A more logical approach would be to charge more to use the wider bays to deter the smaller cars from parking there.

I actually meant that though was not very clear :-)

G-Wiz, Smart cars etc. frustrate me. Often from a distance it appears as if the bay is empty (these cars are too small to be seen from a distance) and when I discover the bays are actually occupied I feel so upset :-(

A bit like a motor bike parked in the middle of a car parking bay.

I think bigger cars should pay bigger parking charges...

Maybe he has, maybe he hasn't, but I'm not sure if he should be asked to discuss it in public?

We have a few car parks built in the 1930's that were state of the art at the time. They run under the promenade and main road on the sea front.

The access to them is very narrow and recently I saw a holiday maker get his Range Rover stuck when trying to get down the ramp. There are plenty of warning signs so it was their fault!

The bays are separated by concrete columns. In the past they were marked out for three cars. Now just one will fit!

I avoid doing that if I can.

Mainly because it wouldn't be the first time I've had to stop a car driver reversing into the bay then claiming he hadn't seen the bike; and they don't come much bigger than Harley ElectraGlides. Also because I've been stood by the bike when some thoughtless git opened a car door next to me and clouted the bike with it, depsite it being slap bang in the centre of the bay.

If the relevant authorities provided adequate motorcycle parking it wouldn't be necessary.

Supermarket parking bays.
Our town's Sainsbury's are far too narrow, even for our old Jazz.
Aldi, OTH, have very good sized bays locally.
(No "Aldi shoppers are all fat" jibes, please!)
