Well, how to do this without spoilers. Gone are the days of everyone seeing this at the same time, or indeed, everyone seeing this.
So - first episode, out today on Amazon. Let's just say if you liked Top Gear as it was, then you're in luck. It's pretty much Top Gear as was with a massive budget boost, as you might have hoped and probably expected. Such silly boys.
Sails perhaps pretty close to the wind legally a couple of times I thought, but I'm sure Amazon and the BBC won't fall out.
Oh, and of course, Top Gear now will either have to be retired or change the format entirely. The game is lost for that show.
Will I watch next week? Oh yes.

Apparently it's been given rave reviews from some of the critics.

I'm looking forward to watching it, although I stopped watching TG several years ago. Hopefully a friend will be able to download it from some pirate site or other.
As an aside, if/when I buy my new Smart UHD TV which subscription channels to watch films etc should I consider subscribing to? The only thing I've ever paid for is my TV licence, although I think Netflix is available on a free 3 month trial.

Netflix first, Amazon Prime video very second, in terms of what is available to see.
And nothing to stop you buying a month of Netflix, watching gazillions of things for your (less than a) tenner, and as of recently you can now buy Amazon for a month too. So swap to Amazon for a month, then skip a few months in the summer, Or whatever works for you. You don't have to sign up for a full year with either service.
You do save a bit if you go for a full year with Amazon though.
|
I enjoyed it - looks like there is some good stuff coming up to.
I see in an Interview Clarkson mentioned the legal aspects - he said that Amazon being American were scared of being sued so had a team monitoring them, even down to the lap time board having to be electronic as a handwritten one would be considered to be the same as the old TG one.
|
Thankyou. Need to get the TV first, although I have promised my mother, with failing eyesight, my 37'' Toshiba before Xmas.
|
Disappointing in that it was just TG. It would have been one of the less cringeworthy episodes, but it was still full of the beyond-tedious mock rivalry and peurile joshing.
I'll watch it again, more in hope than expectation, but I wouldn't suggest that anybody should pay for it.
|
Clarkson and Andy Wilman came up with the current Top Gear format and it was hugely successful. Some bits needed changing for sure. Some elements long past their time were star in a reasonably priced car and the Stig.
So the fact the format has been taken as is by Clarkson et al is not a surprise. And it's a motoring/entertainment show so how much different could it be with the trio? This is what Amazon were paying big money for.
The fact the BBC kept the TG format mostly unchanged apart from some tweaks. It should have ditched the studio, the Stig, Star in a Reasonably Price Car, etc. They didn't and it didn't work without Clarkson, May and Hammond.
I'll probably watch the next episode of the Grand Tour. I just hope they don't get too juvenile. Some of the stunts coming up with tanks might be fun. Or might be terrible.
|
Hammond and May were asked the other evening on the One Show about the show's name.
Co-incidence that Top Gear is often abbreviated to TG, and Grand Tour will be abbreviated to GT. Hmmm!
|
So I watched the first episode and think the last episode of Top Gear with Chris Evans was slightly better. A few of the "jokes" weren't so great - the RAF and dying celebrities for example. There were bits that showed promise however and I, for one, enjoy two decent motoring shows being available.
And "The Grand Tour" -> TGT -> Top Gear Two?
|
The extremely expensive production of the intro made TG look very amateurish. I enjoyed - not perfect (it never was) but will def watch rest of series.
I think they should have made more of the odd-ball cars in the Mad-Max intro scenes - look at them in more detail, rather than the silly dead celebs sketch.
|
I watched it on my PC - 22" monitor + a half-decent pair of Grado's, using the ole woman's Prime, while she watched that Strictly rubbish on our 5 year-old Plasma.
I haven't been a huge fan of TG in recent years TBH, but I really enjoyed watching this first offering of GT and will be watching the next episode, and the next episode etc. etc. etc..
|
Apparently episode 1 was the most downloaded/pirated show ever.
|
There were links doing the rounds to access the programme free of Amazon on certain car forums. We have Prime stack of other stuff to watch at the moment may check it out as and when.
|
Watching it just now, free of charge through Kodi, ironically on an Amazon firestick!!!
|
The spark between them is still there, just one thing missing though.
No, not Stig.
Jessica - The TG music. It's been a part of them for as long as I can remember.
|
One of the great things about TG was the music they used.
I wonder whether GT will eventually claim a bit of music as their own for the theme tune?
Will the Beeb be upset if they use s tune already used on TG?
'Running down a dream' by Tom Petty would be my choice.
Suggestions?

>> Watching it just now, free of charge through Kodi, ironically on an Amazon firestick!!!
Same here. Kodi was the 1st App I installed on my FireStick.
|
Can I have some help finding this Kodi app on my Firestick?
Just spent a very frustrating 15 mins looking in the apps section with no avail.
Where is it?

I have found the instructions on the below link more useful than on the one above, which I failed to comprehend well enough to succeed with.
www.expertreviews.co.uk/media-streamers/1404248/how-to-install-kodi-on-the-amazon-fire-tv-stick
This works, although I now need a Kodi tutorial. I have managed to find an add on that accesses all? BBC iplayer content so I can find radio programs to catch up - the Firestick app only has Radio 1 on it and there is no iPlayer Radio app.
|
You need to sideload it. Already said in the other reply I assume.
|
Install Wookie and Exodus comes with it
|
It's great this promoting ways of avoiding paying to view things legally using Kodi. I assume no come back on Khoo Systems?
I know it's all available and we have search engines and all that. Just checking this forum is okay with suggesting how to avoid paying to view movies, etc.
No Offence or anything intended to the mods! Just that I think this site needs to be careful.

Once Amazon have sued Twitter, facebook and Google then I am sure C4P will be next in their headlights...........

But I was referring to VxFan. But I already told them his email address ;-) Not really.
|
It wouldn't surprise me if you had Rob. You've a track record for being a grass ;)
Anyway,
Q. Is Kodi Legal?
A, The simple answer is yes. Kodi is a piece of streaming software designed to display content on a range of devices, and that means it's perfectly legal in the EU.
As long as your ‘streaming’ and not downloading you are perfectly legal to carry on streaming as you're not breaking any copyright laws.
Q. Is selling Kodi boxes fully loaded legal?
A. No. It's illegal in the EU.
However, end users can install add ons legally. It's not like there are not loads of other websites that show you how to install Kodi add ons and apps. eg. bestforkodi.com/
Taken from
www.entertainmentbox.com/is-kodi-legal-kodi-boxes-illegal/
kodicommunity.com/streaming-pirated-movies-and-content-is-legal/
EDIT - and Amazon themselves are quite happy allowing people to sell ebooks (and paperbacks) explaining how to install Kodi onto a Firestick.
www.amazon.co.uk/How-Install-Kodi-Firestick-services-ebook/dp/B01M3N77YU
www.amazon.co.uk/install-Kodi-your-devices-entertainment-ebook/dp/B01MDNMIUR
www.amazon.co.uk/How-Install-Kodi-FireStick-screenshots-ebook/dp/B01MRJQIFI
www.amazon.co.uk/Fire-Stick-Install-Ultimate-Streaming/dp/1539905063
So does that mean Amazon will also have to sue themselves?

The Grand Tour breaks Amazon Prime video audience record
www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/38061282/the-grand-tour-breaks-amazon-prime-video-audience-record-says-amazon
Although it hasn't published its audience figures, Amazon says it has overtaken The Man in The High Castle, with millions of streams in the US, UK, Germany, Austria and Japan.
"The guys are back, doing what they do best," says Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.
"The chemistry between Jeremy, Richard and James is what makes The Grand Tour so entertaining."
|
>> Apparently episode 1 was the most downloaded/pirated show ever.
The Grand Tour is now "the most illegally downloaded programme ever," according to data analytics company MUSO, breaking a record previously held by HBO's Game of Thrones.
The company has claimed that the first episode of the motoring show was illegally downloaded 7.9 million times, though this figure shrank to 6.9 million for the second episode and 4.6 million for the third.
www.telegraph.co.uk/on-demand/2016/12/12/grand-tour-illegally-downloaded-programme-ever-beating-game/
It's hardly surprising that the illegal download figures have shrunk week by week, given how awful the last couple of episodes were.
|
I wonder if an upcoming episode will show Clarkson's house being demolished following his bet with the other two that the McLaren would do the fastest lap - of which it didn't.
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/09/09/jeremy-clarkson-blows-up-his-old-home-to-make-way-for-new-cotswo/

If news is to be believed, he blew up the house a couple of months ago (September I think). Seemed a bit extreme but probably ties in with the bet if true and not mocked up.

This link to the Metro has an interesting image - there's the Grand Tour "GT" logo on a temporary roof type structure.

Seems to me to be back down to the poorer quality of Top Gear.
I won't spoil it for anyone.
|
Oh I don't know. The bit where..down...and the ...bhp...and how about the...numbers? And as for the ...plums.
Pretty good entertainment I'd have said, but as last week, it's just a bit too long.
|
Watched it finally. Nothing spectacular though.
|
Just watched it, and a bit disappointed this week. Hopefully the first wasn't the best of the 12 episodes.
Dead celebrity joke wasnt really funny last week, not going to get any funnier done every week.
American race driver just ruins the track tests - I know they cant have stig, but they could have got one of the touring car guys like they used to do on TG for the tests
|
I always fast forward any "celebrity" section :-)

>> I always fast forward any "celebrity" section :-)

If you do that this week you'll need to be lightning quick on your remote. It's all over in about 30 seconds in real time.

From an earlier trailer on YouTube, I thought they were going to use Ben Collins (an ex TG Stig)

Don't like the "American". I am not a fan of someone that criticises everything like he does, even if only in jest. I have an elderly relative that does that and it grates after a while! (I get the irony.)
Very enjoyable episode on the whole though a bit light on cars this week.

Just watched the 2nd episode = most enjoyable .. I think maybe I enjoy it more because I sit 1m from my 22" monitor with a pair of superlative Grado open back headphones.
Must be grrreat to watch it (or anything) on a 65" curved 4K TV + a surround sound system!!
|
Just caught up this, i thought it was good. Worth watching again but was very similar to top gear. It wasn't anything we've not seen before.
|
It's meant to be like TG, they want the audience, that was the idea of GT (says the missus)
I wasn't a huge fan of TG and I only started watching GT because (A) it is new and (B) I watch it while the memsahib is watching the that God-awful Strictly stuff :)
|
As good as I thought the first episode of the GT was, the second was truly atrocious. The only car they tested was a £1.8m Aston Martin that was neither road not race legal. The rest comprised hackneyed jokes and 3 over-grown children playing something resembling paintball. If you haven't watched it yet, please don't complain that I have spoiled it for you, because in truth I have saved you from wasting an hour of your life!
On the strength of the second episode, I'm ooot and will be telling Mrs BB to cancel Amazon Prime. Once I have watched all the episodes of Bosch (I love the Michael Connelly books, and the TV series is very faithful to the books - highly recommended if you are a fan of the books).
|
As I said above, too few cars!
My girlfriend thought it was excellent!
|
>> Once I have watched all the episodes of Bosch
'Goliath' was quite good - better than Bosch I thought, although I enjoyed Bosch.
We are also working our way through 'The Man in the High Castle' and we have found a few films we wanted to watch.
There will also be a third and fourth season of Bosch.
|
>> There will also be a third and fourth season of Bosch.

EXCELLENT! Worth keeping Prime just for that.
|
The Man in the High Castle is just chilling with very high production values. There is one scene in particular, that I won't spoil but reminds you why racism should have no place on this earth!
|
Horses, courses. I managed about 20 minutes of Man in the High Castle before being bored witless. Couldn't buy into the premise at all.
I liked Boss a lot and recommended it to a colleague, who misheard me and watched all of Bosch instead.
|
Just finished watching Goliath and really enjoyed it - I hope Amazon commission a second season so a few on the unanswered questions are not left open.
I read that Amazon have doubled their streaming content budget so hopefully they will continue to produce some really good stuff.
|
>> Horses, courses. I managed about 20 minutes of Man in the High Castle before being

We managed 2 episodes before concluding the same. Shame, as it looked quite promising.

I find it quite slow Ponderous even. Probably wouldn't have stuck with it were it not for the Philip K Dick provenance. I was a fan in my SF-reading salad days.

I had a sample of episode 1 last night on sons large flat screen Sony 4K + + and all the sound stuff.
It certainly was very impressive to watch and listen to.
He showed me the P1 Porsche Ferrari bits.
I would need a man cave for it .
|
Haven't watched it properly all the way through yet, but from what I've seen so far, more old TG tomfoolery, as well as demolishing JC's house (as mentioned/predicted earlier in this thread)
|
Yes, I quite liked this weeks effort - maybe better as it was on UK soil and there was no American
|
Episode 3 with Rolls Royce drophead, Aston Martin and Dodge Hell Cat was boring as hell.

Watched it yesterday. Gone back to exactly the predictability of what old Top Gear was. Only difference is the studio is now a tent instead of a hanger.
And "let's pretend to kill a celebrity weekly" wasn't particularly funny the first week, let alone doing the same thing every week.
The only thing mildly funny was having a pop at Chris Evans.
|
I totally agree VxFan.
And I stumbled across a link to an 'episode' of a programme called Head 2 Head that was comparing the McLaren P1 and the Porsche 918.... the test driver in that took his time in his comparison and did a lot of talking. Not that I'd say it was entertainment.
Episode is on Youtube as well (I saw it on Netflix).
youtu.be/3fnTZKvX5jg
They also used a proper race track and did multiple laps on camera. Sadly it's American :-)
|
This weeks, Moroccan, is probably the best so far!
|
I've enjoyed all the episodes so far ... Pity about the carp PT Cruiser though.
:o}
|
Unless I missed it there was no American this week? I wonder if the feedback is now being filtered back through to the editing suite and some things are being dropped / tweeked
|
Thought Moroccan was the worst. A game of battleships that dragged on and then a drive in 3 cars which by their own admission in the summing up, proved absolutely nothing!
|
For those who haven't yet seen it, the 1st episode is available for free from today through to midnight on Boxing Day. Anyone with a basic, free Amazon account can view it.
Out of all the episodes so far (haven't seen this weeks yet though), the 1st one is the best IMHO.
|
Last week's, the one with the Moroccan messing about, was poor and unfunny. Hoping for better.
As a diversion, Stewart Lee on (the subject of) Top Gear/Richard Hammond:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRrTMhAO4ac
|
They got criticised as Top Gear went on.... but this series is worse. I expected much more.
First episode in my opinion is still the best.
|
Enjoyed last week in Morocco, alsi this week in Finland.
Why watch it if you don't?
|
Because there might be something I am interested in, such as this week's Le Mans feature. Although as far as I know there aren't any Ferrari P3s extant, so I suspect it was a P4. A bit more John Surtees would have been interesting too, although I have heard that story from him first hand and he does take his time - a very precise man.
|
Quite enjoyed this week's episode. It's little things like having a pop at TG with Chris Evans in charge that make me chuckle.
Such as Hammond in the Mustang and saying "That's the Cenotaph, where we remember those who died fighting. for us. Better slow down here, show some respect"
youtu.be/uv6IjfIslqE
And the reason why Clarkson couldn't drive the Ford GT40 was because he was too tall for it, and IIRC they had to get Noel Edmonds to do it instead.

What d'you reckon to this advice on/from an expat forum I use:
"The Western Cape in South Africa seems to tick most boxes for your requirements. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Cape You may have to locate a smaller town/village but it would be difficult to find an area with no cellphone coverage"

I'm surprised at that, especially as the OP's son suffers from soooooo many health conditions and sounds somewhat fragile, to say the least, although I suppose he would largely be confined to a gated community.
Looks very nice:

Just watched the 2 part episode of the GT. It had its moments and overall was watchable and enjoyable. In some respects it makes up for no Christmas special this year.
Just goes to show you can still have some fun in some cheap runarounds instead of expensive metal all the time.
Some spectacular background scenery to be seen too.
|
I was at least slightly entertained by this latest episode.
Strangely Amazon says it's available on their website 13th January but I could watch it tonight.
|
I should add I am enjoying Amazon Prime more for delivery of items I think. It's been well worth it so I will probably renew.
Tried sending something to a fairly local Amazon locker. There's a local shop that does pickup but they seem to struggle with it. They end up giving you an item and a while later Amazon says they're collecting the item and send someone to the shop to collect.... only I've already got it!
|
Both last Xmas, and this Xmas , I took out free 30 day trial of Amazon prime (different email addresses) to do my xmas shopping.
But I wouldn't pay them seventy odd quid for the privilege of getting fast or free deliveries.
|
@Rtj I've just read that after watching a clip from Father Ted. There was some resonance !

Well it was clearly available on Amazon last night too. But their website was wrong. They've fixed it now.
