Hi - I may well be in need of a second car in the coming weeks. High on my shortlist is the S40/V50 circa. 2004-5. Several in my budget with around 55-60,000 miles on the clock, and cheaper ones with around 100,000 miles up.
They all have the 2.4 petrol engine (5-cylinder?) and most are automatic. I'm led to believe that this engine/box combo is pretty reliable?
FWIW my late-father bought an ex-demo S40 D5 automatic 11 years ago, and it's still going strong and has largely been very reliable, 85,000-odd miles later...
Principle use will be for work/commuting purposes; no requirement for luggage/family ferrying tasks. With this in mind the Volvo C30 would also fit the bill, with the same drivetrain.
Any experience or horror stories welcome..!

I had a 06 V50 with 260,000 miles when I got rid. It was the PSA 2.0D manual. Only let me down once when the alternator failed. Other than that, non-service items replaced were mainly suspension bushes. Oh and it had had the clutch and DMF done before I got it at 100,000.
Reason to let it go was a hesitation on acceleration, when the first attempt at curing didn't work I was reluctant to throw money at it as the diesel specialist seemed at a loss.
Replaced it with a D3 (2L version of D5) now on 170,000 miles.
