French autoroute peage in RHD car - The Melting Snowman
I shall probably need to head off to France in October for a quick trip on my own. I always use the autoroutes but normally have a passenger who can do the peage payment. I can't be bothered to get one of those transponder thingies as this is a one-off trip. So I will need to get out of the car, pay, and then get back in to drive off. I am worried about the barrier coming down on the car roof if I'm not fast enough. Are these things on a timer or is there a sensor that detects when the car has moved off?

I use a litter picker tool and a credit card. Not elegant, but it works. Drop the passenger window, pop your ticket in and you don't need a PIN number at the tolls, just stick your card in the slot and it reads it.

No the barrier won't come down until you have driven through. Don't rush, you havel all the time in the world. I normally get out of the car, stroll round to the machines and give a little wave to the driver behind. The French are know for their patience towards the English and normally respond with some sort of Gallic gesture of which I'm not sure of the meaning but I'm sure they mean well.

You'll be fine.... And of course quite a few of the autoroutes in the north of Framce have a toll booth set up for RHD cars anyway

I was recently driven from Hong Kong into China in a HK registered ( RHD ) mini cab. China is set up for LHD. At the tolls, ( I guess they're used to it ) the toll cashiers have an open Tupperware type box ingeniously attached to the end of a broom handle which they shove through the open passenger window so that tickets, payments and receipts can be conveniently exchanged. Clever chaps those Chinese.

Ok, thanks. Seems I don't need to worry. Quite like the idea of the litter picker though....

It works. Truly.

I can't even get the M6 Toll to read my contactless card when I'm sitting right next to the damn thing.

It's probably just some algorithm in the system to discourage Skodas from the M6 toll Dave. Nothing personal you understand, just business, an image preservation thing...

Going over the Severn Bridge a few years ago I had a fistful of loose change to hand for the toll, a couple of quid and the rest made up of small silver and coppers. A lack of coordination between myself and the toll operator saw the lot go all over the floor, half of it ending up under the car. That led to an interesting few minutes scrambling about on my hands and knees with an ever lengthening queue behind me.

Back in 2005 we were in Tuscany and I had a hire car. Coming back from Florence to San Gimignano I mistakenly gone in a lane that needed one of those pass things on the windscreen.... no way for me to proceed.

I got out and pressed the button and chatted to someone and they let me through.

Around a year later I got a demand for not paying the toll to my UK address with an option to pay a lot less if I paid straight away. It was more than the toll (which I'd avoided in error due to choice of lane). But not a huge amount. I paid it.

Imagine coming out of a busy Florence onto a toll road... and then the toll road has many booths.... And not too many cars. I picked the wrong one and practically the only other car around followed me. Otherwise I'd have just reversed!

Now driving into Florence and finding parking was something I disliked a lot!

I've got one of those doofer things that we got several years ago and it's brilliant - it gives a beep, the barrier lifts and away you go - it's a bit painful when the bill hits your account though. It was €100 for our last return trip to SW France.

I digress:

" Are these things on a timer or is there a sensor that detects when the car has moved off? "

Yes, there is a sensor and make sure you stop pretty close to the barrier. Before we got the doofer, when on my own, I stopped a metre or so too short to allow me plenty of room to let me walk around the front of the car to get to the payment machine. Nothing would work - it wouldn't take my money and the queue was building. The voice at the other end of the 'Help' button told me to move the car forward a bit. That solved the problem.

Even better now that many peages have a drive thro lane at 30kph - just hold your nerve and slowly increase the speed with experience, 30mph seems about ok :) The ones around Paris seem the most tolerant.

Do NOT keep the transponder next to a mobile phone, it appears that the phone spoofs the transmitter into operating frequently and will flatten the internal non replaceable battery after about 3 months. RTFM!

The fun really starts when the telepeage fails and you are faced with reversing out of the 30k lane. I hate to think of it happening on the Paris ring in the rush hour. The french are not renowned for tolerance. Fortunately the time it failed on me was on the Millau bridge under light traffic conditions.

I now make a point that if it has not been used for several months I will NOT use a drive thro lane until I have shown that the telepeage module is working OK in an ordinary entry point lane.

Usually works fine for me - only had one occasion where it wouldn't work.
