 BMW X5 E53 SUV - Would you wouldn't you? - legacylad
As mentioned previously, my best pal ( last 50 years!) is chopping in his 2006 3.0d X5. One owner from new, mechanically sound, FSH, AC ok, self levelling suspension ok, pano roof & set of winter wheels & tyres. But 240k miles and a fair few minor scrapes around the exterior edges. Nice metallic maroon colour. Sold caveat emtor.
Taking delivery of his new Disco Sport next Tuesday. I can buy it from him for £2k, which is what my local LR dealer, Ribblesdale in Settle, are offering.
Absolutely nothing wrong with my 2011 1.6d Focus. Cheap to run. £35 tax. 55mpg. Practical 5 door. Looks nice in dark metallic grey. New belt & 4 new X Climates fitted 500 miles ago. But after the 330 it is characterless.
My head says NOOOOO!

If it's more or less free, as it should be in all conscience, might be worth a punt?

Ah, £2000 I see. Eeeeeeh....

Even with no p/ex he struggled to get a free set of mats....actually
As for discount, forget it.

On autotrader; BMW X5 3.0 d SE 5dr 194,335 miles Blue Excellent condition, £3,650

So if the one your friend is selling could be made "excellent condition" for a grand, then well worthwhile I should think.

Condition to one side, that's a lot of car for the money.

£2k ?

For sitting high up and watching the plebs below you?

Worth £2k a week for that...

Having slept on the matter, I'm not going to.
It needs a serious professional valet. Despite being mechanically sound, it's like a skip inside and the cost of that, together with serious scratches, maybe a few small dents, on each corner, which require a paint job to make presentable, make the effort not worthwhile. And the cost to insure, even if only for a month whilst I try to sell it, and I'm going away late next week and not around much in the uk until mid October.... But if anyone wants it for £2500 unseen I'm sure he would consider it if you collect from my home in Settle! I can provide pics as I shall be seeing my pal at a reunion this evening in Grassington.
Thanks for your considered opinions though...

My pal just called round to drop off his X5 winter wheels & tyres which I am going to try and sell on EBay, and has now gone off to collect his new LR Disco Sport. He should be back soon then we are off for lunch... Possibly a drive up to KL for a sausage sarnie ( hot dog)
I was tempted to buy it again, but sat on my wallet. After losing several £k on a share yesterday (PANR) I thought the better of it. Nice colour though... Maroon ish, and lovely pano roof. But it's gone now.
Brian can breath again

Oh dear oh dear..
He turned up in the spanking new Disco Sport, 9 miles on the clock, and we had a lovely drive up to KL then over into Dentdale and return via Ribblehead. Unfortunately the touch screen doesn't work properly. Sometimes it comes on . Sometimes it doesn't. And the glass roof doesn't open. Light floods into the cabin but you cannot beat a proper opening pano roof.
It's now back in the garage for investigation and my friend wants his 10yo 240k X5 back, which has been pretty much faultless since new.
I spotted it in the compound when I did a tip run today...almost tempted to pop in and offer a grand for it!

>> And the glass roof doesn't open

But he'll have known that from the literature and the test drive... right? Spending all that and not knowing what you're getting!

I was tempted by the 'sunroof' on the Passat CC. It would tilt but nothing more (curved roof). Decided against it. I do like the sunroof on a car... Rarely have one more than tilted though.

He'll love the Disco when the niggles are sorted.

He knew the roof didn't open.... Like everything in life a compromise was made when buying the LR. Strangely, despite the interior of the X5 being skip like, I think the quality of materials was better than the LR. Thought it best to keep my thoughts to missen.
And I would have bought an X4 instead.
I'm sure once the screen niggle is sorted he will enjoy it
