Mercedes Benz E Class W213 estate - Aftermarket tow bar fitting not allowed? - rtj70
I meant to post this the other week after something I'd read in Auto Express.

Apparently some of the run out model E-Class AMG models did not have a towing allowance shown on the VIN plate. This means no tow bar can be fitted - legally at least. You had to order these cars with a factory fit tow bar apparently. One of the models was the one with the AMG Night Package.

If this is true that is rubbish! I wonder if the VIN plate on Humph's E-Class has a towing allowance displayed?

Without wishing to appear an MB geek, I think Humph's is actually an S212. The 'W' means saloon in MB nomenclature. And 213 is the identifier for current iteration of the E class :)

My E Class, a 2008 estate model has a VIN which starts WDB211. Section O on page 2 of the V5 states :-
O Technical permissable maximum towable massof the trailer:
O.1 braked (kg) 2100
O.2 unbraked (kg) 750

Whatever the nomenclature/numbering, I was referring to the run-out models. Presumably the addition of AdBlue is not the only tweaking. I think the removal of a towing limit is emissions limited even. Presumably the fold away official one doesn't make a difference?

I actually selected the W212 from the drop down... there's isn't a W213 listed. There are no E-Class S212's either. The drop downs need some work. No idea why it was changed to W213.

So the sedan is a 'W' and the wagon is an 'S'?

Sneaky but believable.

I might pop to the local MB dealer sometime. I wonder how much the new E-Class will be when my current car needs replacing. :-) Residuals might make it cheap enough.

The same is true for the EfficientDynamics version of the F30/31 BMW 320d. Not rated by BMW for towing, and no towbar available.

Apparently it's to do with the special engine mounts and clutch/DMF fitted to this version. Other models are fine.

But for the Mercedes you could have had it fitted when built. I think it might impact CO2 emissions but not sure.

But of course modern cars are so superior to old that we are all pleased to accept these sneaky retrograde restrictions :)

Towbar on an E Class? Oh please, don't be silly. If we needed something towing we'd get one of our men to do it with one of the Land Rovers. Towbar indeed !

Rumours are that Merc is considering fitting towbars as standard equipment on all models .

Apparently it reduces rear end damage when reversing over Ferraris.
