Southbound M1 closed since yesterday 23A to 22 due 'Police Incident'. Reports state cuase to be a man on one of the signalling gantries threatening to jump.

www.leicestermercury.co.uk/8203-Man-remains-perched-motorway-stanchion-M1/story-29394104-detail/story.html

All potential diverts, including the signed A42/M42>M6 jammed.

The Lad is in it somewhere on his way back from Download.

I think they need to get a grip and deal with that.

Taser him, and have done with it?

FESTERSHIRE!

(Lunchtime O'Booze and agencies)

Literally billions of sweating South-East motorists were today locked in a deadly game of cat and mouse, following each other in ever-decreasing circles and threatening to go right up their own (cont'd p 94)

FEICESTERSHIRE

(Lunchtime O'Booze and agencies)

Literally billions of sweating, red-faced, child-swatting, wife-cursing South-East motorists were today locked in a deadly game of cat and mouse, following each other in ever-decreasing circles and threatening to go right up their own (cont'd p 94)

This is the definitive version.

He knew there was moving traffic below him when he went up there, now they should open the main backbone motorway of the country again and concentrate his mind on whether he actually wants to jump, or just seek attention.

Pat
M1 Closed in Leicestershire - Bromptonaut
So he jumps and causes a pile up in which several die.

Would you be the Chief Constable or PCC trying to justify your actions in ensuing prosecution and for millions plus civil actions for lost livelihoods ?

I'm afraid there's little choice but to either negotiate him down or starve him down.
M1 Closed in Leicestershire - Old Navy
Put a bouncy castle type airbag under him, Tazer him off the gantry and then lock him up for obstructing the highway. Preferably within an hour of him getting up there. Or take the wishy washy, PC, lovey dovey option and leave him there until he starves.

You don't honestly think he went up there without food, do you?

We've not much idea, apart from clues in his graffiti, as to why he was there.

I'm sure Fathers4Justice protesters took supplies when embarking on stunts like this to promote their cause. Don't think those my colleagues working nearby regularly witnessed on the suicide bridge at Archway necessarily did.

Hey Pat, why don't you just nip up there and push the poor blighter off, it would speed the traffic up after all!?

People tend not threaten to jump unless they have some b***** serious issues so a bit of compassion would be in order.

If he had serious issues he would have gone up there and jumped.

Take it you're not looking for a second career in Mental Health......

Compassion, within reason, yes. But I agree with ON, trampoline across motorway, tranqilliser dart in the geezer's leg, all over in half an hour.

A main artery... precious lifeblood of the economy... freedom of movement... burble burble.

I mean why should some barmy show-off ruin everyone's day?

The police approach worked. He's come down now.

Be a while before road reopens though as there will presumably be some 'crime scene' stuff to be documented and all the Police, medical and Traffic Officer stuff to be moved.

Been arrested for causing a public nuisance
M1 Closed in Leicestershire - Armel Coussine
>> Been arrested for causing a public nuisance

When I was young committing (not 'causing' I admit) a public nuisance meant having a slash in some corner, or not even in a corner.

Don't remember anyone being run in for it. They were after queers in the park in those days.

The police approach has NOT worked, about a dozen hours blockage of several of the countries main transport routes disrupting countless people, missed deliveries, missed flights, meetings and appointments is hardly a success.

I can do compassion....when it's deserved.

I can do straight talking when it's needed....and I would have loved the chance to have talked to him within the first hour.

His body language at no time says he's desperate, or in any danger of junping.

I see the last time he did this (2003) he got 18 months inside. There was no chance of him jumping, he is an attention seeker.

Have you got a source for that ON?

Not looking for an argument (yet!) but reports I can find struggle to name him never mind list his antecedents.

It was either the comments in the paper linked above or a Google search.

Found it, in the comments.

So this is the same man that did it in 2003! Back then he closed the motorway for 10 hours and was given an 18 month sentence. A quick Google of his name confirms all, and his facebook page says its all planned and he had told the police....

I assume there is local knowledge involved.

So that's one battle you won't have to fight on someone else's behalf Bromp:)

Appreciate the smiley Pat but rinse/repeat of obsessive or self destructive behaviour would support rather than refute probability of a mental health issue.

He will probably plead insanity. The threat of life in a secure hospital will cause a miraculous recovery.

Goddam monkey... mentally ill, but not very. His incarceration will cost us a bomb.

They have a short way with these types in much of the third world. So much cheaper and more expeditious... and some if not quite all these people are a genuine waste of space.

I sometimes think a bit guiltily that we Europeans are too humane by half, soppy and sentimental indeed. Awareness that brisk, forceful justice is a possibility must concentrate minds and make the more intelligent idiots lie low.

>>His incarceration will cost us a bomb.

Absolutely. He should have had two years of community service cleaning up stuff or similar at least that would have been useful.
