As reported in another thread my son's BMW has been stolen.
Assuming it will not be found what is the situation re its number plate ?
It is a distinctive but not very high value plate that he may like to retain the ownership of.
Do the insurance company own it ? Is it considered lost ?
Anyone had experience of this situation ?

Thanks for the link.
Not such good news. I think due to an oversight the MoT had just run out.
I assume the clause re
" The vehicle must have had a valid MOT certificate when it was stolen"
I assume this is is about SORN / rusting hulk vehicles but I suspect there is no flexiiblilty on the matter.
Ho hum. Just as well the plae, although distinctive, was not worth a vast amount.

At this moment in time, the insurer will not have paid out because the car could turn up. You'd therefore think MOT or no MOT, he still owns the car and plate even if not in his possession. So putting the plates on retainer would have been possible.
At least they are not expensive private plates.

A colleague had a car written off a few years ago, and in that instance the insurers retained the (not too expensive) plate.
I hope your son has more luck!
