Yesterday I bought (50p each) a 1972 Practical Motorist and a 1977 Car Mechanics magazines. Lots of cigarette and tobbacco adverts, dozens of pre internet adverts for tools and accessories (many useless). Articles on decoking and valve grinding a Triumph Herald, changing a Hillman Imp clutch, overhauling a Corrina steering system etc. Winter driving advice with no mention of winter tyres, and how to refurbish your tired old Triumph Toledo with shiny bullet shaped wing mirrors, an external sun visor, an aftermarket sun roof and alloy wheels! I really must get rid of my car tools, (one day). :-)

...guy opposite me runs an old MG Midget for the summer days.
Having a rummage round the garage last year, I decided that my dwell/tachometer wasn't really going to be of much use to me any more, so I passed it on.......

Those were the days when practical motorists were actually able to do things.
Nowadays the articles would be
How to take your car to a specialist who will charge £1000 to fix your seat adjuster
Where to find a dealer under the scrappage scheme
How to spend £20,000 on something that will be worthless in ten years
Why the economy needs mugs like you to boost consumer spending

I was only thinking recently that on a Sunday morning how many men would be out working on their cars. Even the fairly new ones would often need a bit of tinkering with on a regular basis !
|
Yes. Points, plugs, oil, battery, w/s washer bottle, etc. Those were the days. :-(

I was only thinking along similar lines just now with reference to our mountain bikes. From childhood I've serviced and indeed built off road cycles from scratch. Certainly not afraid of a spanner. But I'm just getting them ready for today's outing and I notice that my back brake needs a bit of adjustment but of course nowadays it's a hydraulic system. Not that I don't know what to do but it's so much more faff than adjusting a cable.
Ach well, I'll just have to live with it as it is today, no time...
Perhaps see you later...
;-)

Skip, remember the 'sounds of the suburbs'?
'Sunday morning, wash the car'?
In fact, a while back, I had to do some minor work on my car, and was all over the area trying to find a spares shop actually OPEN on a Sunday!

Car Mechanics is still published, but has moved with the times. Lots about electronic diagnosis, sensors etc.
This month:
Tantalising regulars
Tales from the Workshop – a few snippets from the four pages: Audi A3 oil and coolant mix, MINI Cooper rattle from the rear, smart fortwo power loss at 55mph, Range Rover grinding brakes.
Survival Guide: Volkswagen Polo. 2002-2009. People love a Polo, not least because spares are so cheap and plentiful. CM has sussed out the best deals.
DIY Servicing: 2004 Land Rover Freelander 1 Td4 HSE.
Used Car Focus: Porsche Boxster. 1996-2012. As classic 911 prices sour, it's reassuring to know you can still buy a Porsche for as little as £3000. But do your homework first to avoid buying a money pit.
Dealer’s Diary: Our man in the trade looks at dodgy emissions tests and shows how to spot a dipstick.
Help! Eight pages of readers' car-related problems including General, Ford, Rover, Vauxhall, Citroën, Peugeot, Hyundai, Honda and Toyota models.
Diagnostics Doctor: Two pages of readers’ engine management problems including Ford and Rover models.
Electronic Diagnostics: smart fortwo. Probing the 3-cylinder 599cc petrol model with Bosch MEG 1.0 management system.
Clutch Clinic: Honda Jazz 1.4 i-DSI.
Modification Series: Pt4 Performance Wheels & Tyres.
Good Garage Guide.
Special features
Essential guide to STEERING RACKS: Fitted to a majority of passenger cars, steering racks are one of the most common causes of MoT failure. CM looks at how you can make them last longer and why the reconditioning processs is more involved than simply a quick adjustment and lick of paint.
Rear Trailing arm bush swap. BMW 3-Series.
Project Cars
2005 Audi A3 2.0 TDI PD. Part 1: Introducing our latest project car, assessing its condition and compiles a list of jobs to be completed.
2007 Volvo S60 2.4D. Part 5: Lowering the Sport ride with Eibach lowering springs.

I haven't bought a car magazine for years, or a cycling magazine come to that. Practical Mechanics used to be a must read, now as Cliff says magazines are just glorified advertising brochures.
|
I don't think I've ever bought a motoring magazine. Really no need for me to do so, as they are readily available whenever I visit my doctor or dentist.

SQ - any relation to Zero?
